  • We're about to have an arctic winter weather event here in South-Central Texas, so we're going to have 3" of snow on Sunday, ....
Sorry, as a NY-Vermonter, I had to chuckle at this....

As an Illinois native, I know why you're chuckling.

We got 1" of snow in Dec. 2017
A dusting of snow in Feb. 2011
I can't remember if we got any snow from 2004-2011.

That's the kind of snow we get in THIS part of Texas.

The forecast storm is going to shatter record lows and everything. It's probably a once-in-100-years level of storm.

It's not just the 3" that's impressive for South Texas.  It's the fact that it's likely to STICK AROUND for TWO WHOLE DAYS. See, even when we get snow it usually melts the next afternoon, as it almost never stays below freezing for a whole day. That's our weather.

People are panic buying here, BTW. I saw a line of 70+ people (all wearing masks UGH) outside the local H-E-B (dominant grocery store chain around here). I think it was due to COVID restrictions. Talk about a 1-2 punch. Social engineering experiment AND a 100-year storm, both happening at once. And 2021 is only 2 months old! Buckle up, folks!

All the Arctic air we got from Siberia is making its way down to The Lone Star state at last I see. We had below minus 40 here. But I know that much snow that far south is a very dicey thing.

  • I just caught a blurb on The Weather Chanel about what's hitting Texas, talk about over doing it, the headline read: "Unsurvivable cold oozing into Texas"

I know they're just doing their part to make a bad situation as bad as possible, but man!

This is probably a dumb question but, do you guys in the southern half of TX have a furnace or some type of stove for heat in your house?

"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

We have a heat pump with regular "resistance heat" for backup. At these temperatures, the efficiency of a heat pump goes down the toilet, and you have to engage "backup" or "emergency" heat, which is basically a resistance element that turns electricity directly into heat. About the least efficient way of heating your home.

That's the only form of heat I have in my small office building here (where I'm typing this). It works well, but it's not the cheapest form of heat.

But the short version is, both of our living buildings (homes?) have central heat/AC.  Our chapel, on the other hand, only has A/C. It's a metal building on a nice concrete slab. The only heat the chapel has is a single small propane heater. Fortunately for us, the next Mass in 7 days away, and it will be back in the high 70's by then. We'll probably be running the A/C that day! I joke you not.

    This weather is insane.

My wife said the last time we got more than 3" of snow was in 1984.

I’m sure they’re blaming it on global warming.
