    Anything can become addictive though.
    Everything in moderation.

Usually true, but when it comes to popular music, listening to it even in moderation is usually enough to completely kill your interior life. This is not by chance, this is by design.

The problem is that pop/rock/metal/etc. music affects some people worse than others - but it does affect everyone. It certainly affects the young folks and teens most of all. More often than not, the music itself is every bit as bad as the lyrics.

If it was like anything else, you'd think that after hearing the same songs a zillion times that you'd be so sick and tired of them that you'd never want to hear them ever again - but music doesn't really work that way.

Rather, the more you hear a song that you really like, the more you want to hear it - if that song has impure or implied impure lyrics or drug use or anti-parents/anti-authority or etc. lyrics, it gets pounded into your brain and helps to shape the young person's thinking and attitude after hearing the same words matched up with the same beat over and over and over again - usually  for years on end -  yet for some, for the most vulnerable (teens they only need to hear it a few times (aka "in moderation") as they hum, sing or think about that song a millions times more often than they actually hear it.

Either way, it is something that is far better for the interior life, the life of your immortal soul, to be avoided completely.

What music do you suggest I listen to then? I don't just listen to metal. I sometimes listen to Math Rock, Modern(OH NO) Classical, Folk, Midwestern Emo, twinkly emo, jazz, etc.

I suggest you listen to whatever music does not contain anti-Catholic lyrics and innuendos.

"But Peter and the apostles answering, said: We ought to obey God, rather than men." - Acts 5:29

The Highest Principle in the Church: "We are first of all under obedience to God, and only then under obedience to man" - Fr. Hesse

  • Advice to listeners of metal, rock, rap, Goth, all kinds of devil-inspired "music." Stop it!  Go cold-turkey for 21 days and see if your prayer life, mood, and mental and physical health isn't improved!  It worked wonders for me.  After an Ignatian retreat (to which Fr. Joe Pfeiffer dragged me me under protest!) I gathered all my CDs, tapes, records (Yes, I'm old!) and sorted the wheat from the chaff.  Most was chaff.  I went without for 21 days, after which time I consigned the chaff to the campfire.  No, I didn't listen to Metallica or anything in that category, but came to realise that I was intellectually lax from listening to the popular tunes of my younger days, the late 60s through early 80s.  What do I still listen to?  Irish music, classical, folk music, marching bands, Catholic music, some bluegrass, Palestrina, chant, both Gregorian and eastern rite, music that has stood the test of time.  Music has a way of 'sticking' in the mind and heart.  Think!  I didn't want to be found on my deathbed with "Get Down Tonight" going through my mind!

  • Are you aware that black metal is utterly anti-Christian and Satanic to the core? The genre was pioneered by men who literally burnt down churches.

  • Saying that it is permissible to listen to these types of music because God allowed men to develop them is illogical. God permitted the Aztecs to hold bloodthirsty diabolical rites of human sacrifice, it doesn't follow that He therefore approved of this. This is rather like the idea some people have that anything natural must be good, not so strychnine is perfectly natural, yet one wouldn't want to ingest it. The music under discussion is intrinsically disordered. It exalts the bestial over the spiritual nature of man. The real origin of "rock" is to be found in voodoo & other occultic sects. The Beatles had much of their music written by the Jew Adorno who got it from ancient music used in the rites of Bacchus. If you don't know what the rites of Bacchus were, look them up & see if the reaction of modern young people to rock is any different from the ancients' festivals of debauchery.

That has no effect on the genre.

It's like saying jazz music is horrible because Miles Davis took a speedball.

Also, there are many bands in the genre that are not anti-christian at all.

  • Well I can't tell if you're merely a troll or you are a typical modern young punk who glories in his stupidity. You don't want to learn anything, don't want to know anything, prefer not to make use of the reason that God gave you at all. You'd much rather be like a beast of the field concerned only with that which gratifies your senses. If you can't eat it drink it smoke it, you have no use for it. I often think that if you imbeciles could find one among you who couldn't tell left from right up from down, & couldn't speak more than five words of any language you'd proclaim him your king. I pity you, what a terrible waste of a human being, I especially pity your family who probably had hoped that you would not finish up among the slack-jawed drooling idiots. God have mercy on your soul "dude".

I guess he is just a confused and misinformed boy.
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

I literally want to just have a thread where I can discuss music without being called a terrible waste of a human being.
