.

In common usage today, "awful" means extremely bad or unpleasant;  terrible.

Perhaps you could explain why you think this altar is "awful" - or are you also referring to the artwork behind the altar?

For those unfamiliar with stone and imitation stone painting, the floor in front of the steps is made of a natural stone with particular colors and patterns, and the steps are made of another stone of different colors and patterns.  The imitation stone of the altar is made to coordinate with the stone of the floor and the stone of the steps, and as such, it is a look that most likely would be impossible to find in natural marble;  not only in small quantities but in the very thick and large size that this altar demands.

Some unusual colors and patterns can be obtained in small sizes, that is less than one inch in diameter.  But this altar is a lot bigger than that.
