Hello friends,

I'm 20 years old now, and I still haven't really chosen what I want to do with my life. I'm thinking about picking up a skilled trade, like carpentry or something, but I'm not sure what. Do you fellows have any suggestions?

I'm not one of the fellows but I do know that electrical is good. It is something that even a lot of DIY folks are willing to pay for. They may be able to do a lot of their own carpentry or drywall or plumbing but pay to know their electrical work is done right because of the risk of fire. If you're looking for better pay do commercial electrical work rather than residential. You can always moonlight with residential work. I have friends/family in all the trades and the electricians seem to be faring the best in this economy. But as with anything it may depend on the area of the country you are in.

Welding might be good, not a lot of welders out there depending on where you live. The son of a family friend makes $$$ as a welder.

Those are good suggestions, Marlelar. I've never really thought of being either. Being a welder sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I'll look into it.

If I was your age and interested in a trade, I'd go with electrical or plumbing. Get your license and then work for the government (a college, VA hospital, school district, etc). The key is to work for the government: you'll get great benefits and be able to retire early. When you're 40 years old retiring with a fat pension, you'll thank yourself.
