When I was there the "tuition" (which also included room and board) wasn entirely nominal (maybe $2,000 per year?)  In any case, I had it easier where my parents sponsored me, though I had enough saved away to pay for it myself if necessary.

BUT ... I had always disliked the whole system of seminarians being asked to find sponsors and benefactors ... because seminarians would feel bad about letting down their sponsors if they didn't make it through to Ordination.  I think that the Seminary should have just accepted donations in general (a benefactor fund) and distributed the money according to need.  "You spent $8,000 [or more in later years I'm sure] sponsoring me for 4 years ... but I'm not going to finish, and so you kindof just wasted $8,000."  That was never a particularly healthy dynamic.
I am in agreement here.  I was at Winona for three years from '94-'97 and never paid anything, as I did not have anything to give. I often had the same feeling, "If I get booted out, how will the benefactors feel?"  It could be that some of the parishioners from my home church donated anonymously without my knowledge. I might just write a check to the SSPX seminary so as to placate my conscience.  After all, I am grateful for the education that I received during those years.

Any update on Fr. Nichols?

I too always thought the whole benefactor thing was odd when I was at Winona. And like Lad, my parents paid my tuition so I did not have to deal with the awkwardness of seeking benefactors and perhaps letting them down.

I always got along marvelously with the SSPX brothers stationed at STAS in the late 1980s: Brs. Gerard, Joseph, Hilary, Benedict. They brought a lightness to the seminary atmosphere.
