There's a fiction book that describes probably most accurately what would happen in the event of an EMP, "One Second After"
It's pretty readable. There isn't much the average person can do. Unless you're rural and have a subsistence farm of vegetables and animals and they graze and eat local foo(s) only that do not require longhaul trucking for delivery, you're so interdependent on electronic intrastructure you're pretty much out of luck.
You'd have to faraday 'cage' everything you wanted to remain functioning after such an event.
