  • So, I did get some additional details from my sister, who's an RN/BSN and is close to the situation.  Father remained at the rectory, despite advice to the contrary.  His blood oxygen level was down to 79, which my sister said was medically almost impossible, so they brought him oxygen to the rectory.  My sister said he should have been unconscious with those levels, and that at a hospital they would have put him on a ventilator (probably good that he didn't go then).

Yesterday, he cancelled the Baptism that had been scheduled for after the 9AM Mass this morning ... and yet I'm told he showed up for 9AM Mass this morning at IHM anyway, despite all medical advice ... and was coughing up a storm in the confessional and moving VERY slowly.  We didn't go because as of last night everything was cancelled.

I'm told that Father is very confused (probably due to low oxygen levels) but being very stubborn.  Sunday Mass was supposed to be moved to noon on Sunday (from the normal 5AM) and the priest from St. Peregrine (SSPX nearby) was going to offer the Mass there.  But now I'm not so sure that Father doesn't intend to go ahead with Sunday Mass at 9AM.  Priest from St. Peregrine usually offers Mass at St. Peregrine Sunday morning and then goes to Eastern Ohio close to Youngstown for a 4:00 PM Mass, so the plan would be for him would stop in between at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Akron.

Now, the only time in the past 36 years that I've known Father Carley to miss offering Mass and hearing Confessions was when he was hospitalized for hip surgery, and even then he came back WAY too early, against medical advice.  He continued to offer Mass even though he couldn't genuflect, and had a rail installed up the altar steps to help him get up the steps.

I surmise that Father Carley heard that SSPX would offer Mass at noon on Sunday (vs. the usual time of 9:00 AM).  For 36 years, you could set your watch to 9:00 AM when the altar boy rang the bells for Father and the altar boy(s) to come out from the sanctuary.

When he went in for his hip surgery, just before Christmas.  Father requested SSPX to send someone in to take the Sunday 9:00 AM Mass.  They told him it would have to be at noon or early afternoon.  Father was adamant that it must be at 9:00 and threatened to rescind leaving his properties to the SSPX in the event of his death or disability.  So we arrive at Mass on Christmas Day, the bells ring ... and Bishop Tissier emerges from the sacristy to offer the Christmas Mass.

Father has remained in great physical condition because he's always insisted on doing a lot of his own yard work, and other work, and he's always exercised, etc.

I'll post any additional information as I get it.

  • My most vivid memory of Fr. Carley was serving as MC for a Confirmation Mass at IHM with Msgr. Williamson. Fr. Carley was deacon and Fr. Sullivan was subdeacon.

I used to visit Father Sullivan when I was a seminarian, but mostly was down at IHM, since it was a lot closer at the time and we had been at Father Carley's for years already.  My brother Steve would always MC for confirmations at Immaculate Heart.

At one point, Father asked me and Steve to take care of getting him into his vestments properly, but of course my brother passed away prematurely of cancer (at the age of 49).

I used to be on Father's Board of Trustees.  When Father was contemplating passing over his properties to SSPX, I warned him that it's likely (due to the proximity of St. Peregrine) that SSPX would sell his property, close the chapel, and tell everyone to move to St. Peregrine.  But he felt he had no other real option (this was over 10 years ago now, I think).  Father asked us to resign, but I very respectfully resigned instead of signing the papers, because I did not want my signature on the forms when 6 months after Father's passing, Immaculate Heart of Mary was no more.  I'm even more convinced NOW that they'll sell his property, since St. Peregrine has moved a LOT closer to where IHM is (about 25 minutes away, where it used to be a little over an hour).  Some of IHM could go to Girard, some to St. Peregrine ... and IHM would be closed down, so they could funnel the money over to paying more for the Seminary.  Father owns the church, the school, and about 3 homes on the street (one in particular is very nice).  But the property would be attractive to developers, since it's adjacent to a country club and the attached neighborhood filled with million-dollar homes.  I'm guessing they could get a million dollars for the entire thing.

If Father recovers, I would recommend that the Resistance speak with Father Carley.  Now that they're growing, have bishops, and have some seminaries, they could convince Father that they're a viable option.  Father has always been more of the Resistance mentality.  He holds that NO Ordinations are invalid (not just doubtful).  I also told him about SSPX's penchant for not conditionally ordaining priests, which has gotten much worse in recent years.  So between the possibility of SSPX sending (in his view) invalid priests and selling his property, he's in a position where he might be persuaded.

I heard a story from another older priest in the Cleveland Diocese (ordained in 1967) that at one point he was bringing Holy Communion to a hospital, including to someone from Father's chapel, and Father told him very gruffly not to bring their "idolatrous cookie" to people from his chapel.  :laugh1:

Does he still go down to Wheeling WV to offer Mass?  If he does, I can't think he'd try to make it under the circuмstances.  He'd have to have a driver.

From all I'm hearing here, I fully expect him to continue offering Mass unto his dying breath.

I'm not sure about how often he still goes down to Wheeling, but I don't think it's every week anymore.  Yes, he's required a driver for many years now, as his reflexes aren't what they used to be.  For some time, I was the driver, and more recently it's been my nephew.

I completely agree that he'll be offering Mass until he dies.  Father is very strong, determined ... and in some cases perhaps stubborn about keeping to his duties and his regimented schedule.

  • Father Leo Carley is very ill with pneumonia.

He is 89 years old (will be 90 in October of this year) and still runs Immaculate Heart of Mary chapel in Akron OH and for many years also drove down to Wheeling, WV.  He was ordained for the Diocese of Scranton in 1958, and was one of the earliest members of the Orthodox Roman Catholic Movement started in 1975 by then-Father McKenna and Father Francis Fenton.

Father Carley is one of the last remaining members of the "old guard", priests ordained before Vatican II, and in his case during the reign of Pope Pius XII.

In the 36 years that I've known him, I don't know of a single time Father missed even a single day due to illness ... apart from when he had a broken hip about 10 years ago now, but he was back in just a few weeks.  At 89, he has still been offering Sunday Mass and Daily Mass, 2 Masses on Holy Days of obligation, and hearing Confessions before every Mass.

He was supposed to baptize my niece's new baby tomorrow after the Saturday morning Mass tomorrow, but he suddenly became very ill with pneumonia, so that the news just reached us late this tonight.  Knowing Father Carley, I expect him to bounce back, but given his age, we can never know.
Thanks Ladislaus, for passing on all this information! What a heroic priest Fr. Carley is!

  • I just got an update that Father Carley is on his way to the hospital.  Not sure if his condition worsened or he just realized he wasn't getting better.  He heard Confessions and offered Mass this morning despite reports that he looked very ill, and his plan was to have the SSPX priest from St. Peregrine, Father Budds, offer Mass at 12:00 noon at IHM, but that Father Carley would hear Confessions at 11:00 AM (I surmise that Father couldn't get over there in time for the Confessions), but that's not going to happen now.  I'll be inquiring into whether Father Budds could visit Father Carley and offer him the Last Rites, Confession, Holy Communion, etc.

  • Sounding like the Curé d'Ars, St. Jean Vianney. Would that more priests like Fr. Carley are somehow being called in their youth and formed albeit quietly out of the spotlight. We can hope.

Yes, Father has gone about taking care of souls very quietly.  He didn't make Youtube videos or seek celebrity or notoriety, but just very faithfully did his duty, every day, day in day out.  As I mentioned, you could set your watch by his usual schedule.  Having a steady routine is one of the keys to perseverance, where it becomes habitual.

Indeed, I've been blessed to know Father Carley, perhaps the last of his generation in the United States, priests ordained before Vatican II (under Pope Pius XII) who didn't go along with the Conciliar revolution.

I agree with your assessment. The property you mention is very valuable and the SSPX would sell it. The best scenario is that Fr. Carley recovers soon and restores the situation before the parishioners lose their Church.
