My most vivid memory of Fr. Carley was serving as MC for a Confirmation Mass at IHM with Msgr. Williamson. Fr. Carley was deacon and Fr. Sullivan was subdeacon.
I used to visit Father Sullivan when I was a seminarian, but mostly was down at IHM, since it was a lot closer at the time and we had been at Father Carley's for years already. My brother Steve would always MC for confirmations at Immaculate Heart.
At one point, Father asked me and Steve to take care of getting him into his vestments properly, but of course my brother passed away prematurely of cancer (at the age of 49).
I used to be on Father's Board of Trustees. When Father was contemplating passing over his properties to SSPX, I warned him that it's likely (due to the proximity of St. Peregrine) that SSPX would sell his property, close the chapel, and tell everyone to move to St. Peregrine. But he felt he had no other real option (this was over 10 years ago now, I think). Father asked us to resign, but I very respectfully resigned instead of signing the papers, because I did not want my signature on the forms when 6 months after Father's passing, Immaculate Heart of Mary was no more. I'm even more convinced NOW that they'll sell his property, since St. Peregrine has moved a LOT closer to where IHM is (about 25 minutes away, where it used to be a little over an hour). Some of IHM could go to Girard, some to St. Peregrine ... and IHM would be closed down, so they could funnel the money over to paying more for the Seminary. Father owns the church, the school, and about 3 homes on the street (one in particular is very nice). But the property would be attractive to developers, since it's adjacent to a country club and the attached neighborhood filled with million-dollar homes. I'm guessing they could get a million dollars for the entire thing.
If Father recovers, I would recommend that the Resistance speak with Father Carley. Now that they're growing, have bishops, and have some seminaries, they could convince Father that they're a viable option. Father has always been more of the Resistance mentality. He holds that NO Ordinations are invalid (not just doubtful). I also told him about SSPX's penchant for not conditionally ordaining priests, which has gotten much worse in recent years. So between the possibility of SSPX sending (in his view) invalid priests and selling his property, he's in a position where he might be persuaded.
I heard a story from another older priest in the Cleveland Diocese (ordained in 1967) that at one point he was bringing Holy Communion to a hospital, including to someone from Father's chapel, and Father told him very gruffly not to bring their "idolatrous cookie" to people from his chapel.
