  • Obedience is, without doubt, more meritorious than any austerity. And what greater austerity can be thought of than that of keeping one's will constantly submissive and obedient? ----St. Catherine of Bologna
1 Corinthians: Chapter 13 "4 Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; 5 Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;"

And the other St. Catherine says:

    Quote
“Alas, Most Holy Father!  At times, obedience to you leads to eternal damnation.”
St. Catherine of Siena, Letter to Pope Gregory XI

and St. Bernard of Clairvaux says:

    Quote
"It appears clearly that those who command things evil are not to be obeyed, especially when, in yielding to wrong commands, in which you appear to obey man, you show yourself disobedient to God, who has forbidden everything that is evil. For it is altogether unreasonable to profess yourself obedient when you know that you are violating obedience due to the superior on account of the inferior, that is, to the Divine on account of the human. What then! God forbids what man orders; and shall I be deaf to the voice of God and listen to that of man? The Apostles did not understand the matter thus when they said, 'We must obey God rather than men' (Acts v. 29)."   Letter 7 of Some Letters of Saint Bernard, Abbot of Clairvaux.

    Just to give context.

I am posting quotes from this website

    https://www.catholictradition.org/Saints/virtue6.htm

Which get the quotes from a book that was published in 1891.

Usually October's virtue is Confidence in God, but I posted those quotes in June, so I am posting the June virtue quotes of obedience now.

I just do it to share, not make any kind of statement.

You could have "shared" without the :facepalm::facepalm: .

No need for the drama. :cowboy:

    Keep it up.

This is a forum of practicing Catholics who almost entirely believe either (1) the post-V2 "Popes" have been awful and must be resisted, not obeyed and (2) since V2 there have been only anti-Popes who are owed no obedience. Both of those categories of practicing Catholics know that calls of "obedience" were the prime weapon used against practicing Catholics to prevent a return to the Faith.

    Hence…

In this forum posting a quote encouraging obedience, is like "dropping a gauntlet," a dramatic call for a duel.

Whether foolishly or intentionally, you got the duel you invited. If you put bait in the water, expect to be eaten by sharks. Deal with it.

I understand your point.  But we don't throw out all obedience because of the crisis in the church.  Women still need to practice obedience to the man they married (as long as he isn't going against God). Men still need to be obedient to their bosses and their priests (again as long as it is not against God).

And if their superior is going against God, then the person will have to practice patience and acceptance for God's will for them.  And if need be maybe some just anger (retaliating because they are going against God)  I don't know, just some thoughts.

  • Obedience is a penance of the soul, and for that reason a sacrifice more acceptable than all corporal penances. Thence it happens that God loves more the least degree of obedience in thee, than all the other services thou mayest think to render Him. ----St. John of the Cross
1 Corinthians: Chapter 13 "4 Charity is patient, is kind: charity envieth not, dealeth not perversely; is not puffed up; 5 Is not ambitious, seeketh not her own, is not provoked to anger, thinketh no evil;"
