Attached is a very informative article about the debate over Ecclesiology at Vatican II, focused on Msgr. Fenton's conflict with the progressive Modernists.

Here's an interesting tidbit which appears on page 163 (footnotes omitted):

As was to be expected, Feeney’s position was not the one that worried Fenton.
In fact,he actively campaigned for Feeney’s rehabilitation on various occasions
during his first stay in Rome for the Council. “I can truthfully say that
I have never lost a chance to put in a good word for the old boy,” he
reflected in his diary. Fenton’s real concern was with liberal Catholi-
cism, which he believed had made inroads into the highest ranks of the
hierarchy.In the field of ecclesiology, such liberalism was evident in
the attempt to downplay the Church’s necessity for salvation.
