What I've read in various places over the years, is that Archbishop Lefebvre was hopeful that things would turn around under the reign of John Paul ll.  That might explain his optimistic letter in 1980.  Of course when the Assisi scandal occured he realized there could be no agreement.

Yes, it's clear from the record that Archbishop Lefebvre was hopeful with the election of Wojtyla, from about 1980 - 1984.  All the stuff that the neo-SSPX cite to assert that +Lefebvre would favor their new orientation comes from that period, where +Lefebvre made statements about asking to be allowed to make the "experiment of Tradition" within the Conciliar pantheon.  That was because Wojtyla gave him some lip service that sounded positive at first.  In fact, +Lefebvre felt that Wojtyla's "advisors" changed his mind.  In any case, as Assisi was around the corner, he did a complete 180 and said that if Assisi happened (it did and was worse than expected) he might have to come out as a sedevacantist.  So it's disingenuous to cite the 1980-1984 Archbishop Lefebvre (as some even here on CI do and the neo-SSPX exclusively does).
