  • I see no good reason for a statement like this, without any details. My opinion is that they just did it to see how people react. Be it Leo, be it their faithful. If the reactions are very bad, they might just pretend it has never happened.
Archbishop Lefebvre also announced one year ahead of his intention to consecrate bishops, but as history showed us, details and rushed negotiations came about only much later.

  • My doubts were the state of necessity as regards legitimate non-heretical priests within the diocesan/eparchy structure of the Church. Those doubts were relieved in the discussion on Cath Info.

It’s well known that the SSPX wanted to maintain a good relationship with Pope Francis. They simply waited till he passed. The writing was on the wall that they would announce these consecrations this year. Especially when they began criticizing Pope Leo.

    I support these consecrations.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

You are not obliged to resolve the Church’s crisis by absolutizing any faction. Your obligation is to preserve faith, reason, humility, and charity, and to refuse to make any human authority into an idol.

  • I would be interested in hearing any educated objections to the SSPX consecrations.

Sure, but the Archbishop did not have a record of lies, deceptions and secret dealings. This is a completely different situation.

  • Note regarding February 2nd:
The date does not appear to have been chosen arbitrarily by Father Pagliarani. After Archbishop Lefebvre decided to consecrate bishops and considered various dates internally, the actual date was publicly announced on February 2nd, 1988.

In the biography of Bishop Tissier de Mallerais, chapter 19, "New Ultimatum" states:

    Quote
On February 2 Archbishop Lefebvre confirmed the news: “I am resolved to consecrate at least three bishops on June 30, and I hope to have the approval of John Paul II. But if he were not to give it to me, I would do without it for the good of the Church and for the continuance of Tradition.”
