  • Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ drank wine.

Does that make Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ modern and worldly?

  • If everything was done in moderation then how did we end up with Vatican II, divorce, abortion, sex abuse, embezzlement, drug, sex , alcohol, and food addiction, broken families, legalization of  sodomy, hoarding, clutter, shopping on Sundays?

Back in ancient times, they used to have sports arenas where people watched events that included feeding Christians to the lions.

The present day NFL rejects Christians who kneel to pray while allowing players with Muslim ties to kneel during American National Anthem.

From music on radio to concerts, books theatre, tv, radio most sold their souls to satan.  Those old movies aren’t so innocent either.

No, our Lord was not worldly or modern.       Wine becomes the Precious Blood of Jesus.

Yes, Jesus drank wine and water.  The wine Jesus drank didn’t have added sugar or sulfates like it does today.

This kind of thinking leads to Jansenism. I’m not saying we watch TV or bad books - but to say that drinking wine is wrong because worldly people do it to excess is also wrong. Worldly people also breathe air, drink coffee, brush their teeth. The list goes on. While we have to be not of the world, we still have to be in it. And we shouldn’t become Jansenist along the way. Again, temperance, not prohibition is virtue.

    .
If it was made from grapes, it had sugar (fructose).
    .
Is the prohibition against alcohol on this list because alcohol is alcohol, or because it has sugar?  I like the list as an example of sacrifices (and some common sense items) Catholics should at least consider if not commit to.  But I tend to agree with Mega-fin that the way it's being presented is on the Jansenistic side.  Catholics are holymorphic, we're form and matter, soul and body.
    .
The best Christian society would have a tempered appreciation for this, not a rejection of matter as though it were a prison to the spirit.
"Be kind; do not seek the malicious satisfaction of having discovered an additional enemy to the Church... And, above all, be scrupulously truthful. To all, friends and foes alike, give that serious attention which does not misrepresent any opinion, does not distort any statement, does not mutilate any quotation. We need not fear to serve the cause of Christ less efficiently by putting on His spirit". (Vermeersch, 1913).

  • Temperance isn’t being preached much anymore.

Also,  Jesus drank wine at weddings and special occasions.  He drank water from the well.  The wine didn’t have added cane sugar or sulfites.

In regards to soda after learning that baby parts were used as flavor enhancers, I would abstain.

Maybe the word should limit alcohol to special occasions.  Plenty of people pledge Pioneer to the Sacred Heart Of Jesus during Lent and forever.   Probably there is a problem with lack of temperance.

Who said "everything was done in moderation"?

They ended up with "Vatican II, divorce, abortion, sex abuse, embezzlement, drug, sex , food addiction, broken families, legalization of  sodomy" because they were not LIVING the faith in the 40's - 60's and much longer. If people had LIVED the faith in the 1950's none of it would have happened in the 1960's.

  • One needs to strike a prudent balance concerning a Rule of Life.  It will be different for each individual except in the case of vowed religious.  (There, too, allowances are made.  For example, a frail, elderly religious can’t engage in vigorous exercise followed by a cold shower!  But a younger, vigorous religious may be permitted to exceed the rules of his order with permission of his superior.)

For those who object to Viva’s list of practices, citing Jansenism, it is important to know what exactly is wrong with Jansenism.  Jansenism a heresy.  Heresies are used by Satan to entice Catholics from sound doctrine, thus corrupting morals.  The Enemy uses it in two ways to tempt two types of souls.

Firstly, the lax soul can be lead astray when he sees a list of “rules.”  This is accomplished, especially if he has a choleric temperament.  His base reaction is one of rebelliousness.  If he can be led to rashness and anger, he is apt to refuse “optional” practices as an excuse to indulge the appetites.  The man of lax conscience follows rules in public, thus appearing outwardly holy, while remaining inwardly in mortal sin.

The second kind of soul tempted by lists of rules is the scrupulous.  On the surface, this seems not to make sense.  What better for the insecure than a clear list of do’s and don’ts?  The problem comes with the fact that the majority of scrupulous souls are of a melancholic temperament, the main weakness of which is fear or timidity of pain and suffering, a subtle manifestation of pride.  A list of rules can become a substitute for the hard work of prayer, spiritual warfare of routing out besetting sin.  The scrupulous man replaces the graces given by the Holy Ghost, whose use requires sacrifice, with impersonal rules.  Being naturally insecure, the closer he attempts to be perfected by meticulous adherence to the rules, the farther he falls from the goals he has set for himself, forgetting that he is to please God, not a self-imposed, inflexible list.  The devil’s aim is accomplished when the scrupulous soul gives up, feeling he cannot be saved.
By either route, Jansenism is a most harmful heresy to the serious Catholic.  For American Catholics, it is uniquely tempting because of the ingrained Puritan mindset set down by the Freemasonic Founding Fathers.  It is the Catholic version of Calvinism, with its rigid T.U.L.I.P. theology.

Why not change the title to Recommended Practices for Catholics?  Any one, combination, or all of these are meritorious whether done full-time or during Lent, Advent, or at times of discernment.  For most laity, practicing all of them simultaneously until death is not appropriate to his state of life, whether married or single.

    May I propose simple rewording?

Recommended Practices for Catholics Wishing to Grow in Holiness

    1. Take cold, short showers sufficient to good hygiene.
    2. Practice heavy, manual labor or exercise.
    3. Walk and pray the Rosary, or pray the Rosary kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament or an image of Our Lady.
    4. Abstain from alcohol, tobacco, sweets, snacking between meals.  Suggestion: Substitute an apple for cake, water for drink, taking a walk for eating a snack.
    5. Get sufficient sleep; more if you stay up too late, less if inclined to sleep in.
    6. Limit screen time to necessity, business, school.  Substitute a voice call or a friendly snail mail letter for texting.
    7. Abstain from TV, video games, and other forms of electronic entertainment.  Substitute spiritual reading or Lives of the Saints.  Play board or other real games with family and friends.  Sing or play musical instruments.  Do folk or square dancing.
    8. Fast and Abstain beyond that which is required.
    9. Perform corporal or spiritual acts of Mercy.
    10. Hear weekday Mass or attend Rosary, Compline, Vespers, etc.

(These practices are highly recommended to all Catholics.)

If we really live a Catholic life we will naturally do penance and mortifications. Keep in mind that having, raising and educating to salvation  say 10 children, is a more severe mortification than all the things on the list.

Absolutely!  Especially given the deplorable state of the world today!
May God bless you and your wife in raising up 10 souls!

Thank you, but I was not talking about myself for I have less than 10 children, my point was that just raising children is a lifelong sacrifice, mortification.

  • Here's how I would adapt your plan, Viva.

    “Take short, cold showers

    Practice regular, intense exercise.

    Walk and Pray the Rosary.

Get a full night’s sleep (at least 8 hours is recommended)
for health but not necessarily for sanctity. Many saints slept much less with their praying and watching .

Abstain from Imbibe a moderate amount of alcohol.

Abstain from Enjoy desserts and sweets in moderation.

Eat an apple locally grown fruit in season.

Abstain from eating between meals. No snacking.  Agree in theory

Abstain from soda or sweet drinks.   Unsweetened ice teaTea made from homegrown herbs. And water is the best.

Abstain from television, movies, or televised sports.

    Abstain from video games.

Read the Bible and Catholic books.

Abstain from nonessential material purchases. (Think simplicity.)”

Only listen to music that lifts the soul to God.

Use the computer for information gathering, entertainment, conversation, communication, work, school, or essential tasks (e.g., paying bills)

Only use mobile devices and internet for essential communications to promote and defend the faith.

Practice fasting days: Wednesdays and Fridays (abstain from meat and only eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal)”.

This should be done everyday by all Catholics.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

    1. “Take short cold showers” I can see the health benefit but why not warm occasionally? I don’t see how this has anything to do with Catholicism unless you are taking hour long showers and it interferes with yiur duties: work, prayer, family etc
    2. “Abstain from alchohol” I thibk what you’re looking for is to practice temperance and being moderate. We aren’t Puritan heretics.
    3. “Abstain from sweets, eat an apple” gluttony indeed is one of the 7 deadly sins but why would you say to never eat sweets? That’s ludicrous unless you have some health problems or weight problems.
    4. “No snacking” why?
    5. “Abstain from soda or sweet drinks” again don’t be glutenous but why Abstain altogether? Ridiculous
    6. “Abstain from television sports movies” why? Obviously don’t make them an idol but why Abstain altogether?
    7. “Abstain from video games” are Catholics not allowed to have fun? Some games are good but I can definitely see why you would say that. I would say to Abstain from Violent games or games you can make an idol. Temperance is key
I agree with some but it is Yiu personal opinion it doesn’t have to be “done everyday by Catholics”

  • I left off something very important for a Christian life:

    Practice hospitality.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.
