I took these two photos at la Cathedrale Marie-Reine-du-Monde in Montreal. This cathedral is an architectural replica of St. Peter's Basilica in 1:3 scale.

Following on recent discussion, I think some people here might find them edifying. They depict true and nearly archetypical events in the history of French-Indian relations in New France.

"24 June 1615: First sung mass, on the banks of the River of the Prairies, by the Reverend Denis Jamay."

"16-17 March 1649: Torture of the Jesuit Fathers J. de Brebeuf and G Lalemant in Huron territory."

Raoul was just mentioning something about martyrs, I believe. Note that these atrocities were committed by the Iroquois, not the Hurons. According to Wikipedia, "Brébeuf did not make a single outcry while he was being tortured and he astounded the Iroquois, who later cut out his heart and ate it in hopes of gaining his courage."

And you'll note the Iroquois were allied to the Protestant English, while the Huron were allied to the Catholic French. The Iroquois then split during the American Rebellion.

One assumes that the Indians allied with the French weren't in habit of turtoring and eating the French.

If I remember correctly the alliance was later on, those images are depicting the 17th century.
