What is a shaman?

I've come across this term, I have no idea what it is. I don't trust the broad internet. What is a shaman? 

One of my friends I used to know way back, he's approaching 30, is telling me he's a shaman. He said a whole lot of nothing when I asked him what it means.

Some pagan, new age term that describes someone into the spiritual realm.

Good to know. To put it simply, he's on a timeline, he believes there are infinite of. Through willpower he can change which one he is on. Dude brought me close to Jesus in my younger years, he has denounced Jesus being a physical being and announces the Bible is all metaphors, since then I don't know what happened to him.

A shaman is a tribal witch doctor. A warlock.

As far as I know it, a shaman is a sort of pagan religious figure. He could be a healer, a priest, a magician, etc.
