I was never taught anything about medieval monarchies, at least not taught in the formal sense like in school.
The basic narrative is "Roman Empire, Dark Ages, Renaissance, Reformation, people finally got smart and became Protestants".
A thousand years are summarily dismissed in two words.
Catholics know better. Granted, the period from AD 400 to 1400 wasn't perfect, but it's more accurate to refer to it as "the Age of Faith".
