The Phoenix Police Department deserves the utmost respect. They worked overtime and even expedited the forensic lab tests because they felt an attack on a "man of the cloth" was like an attack on a fellow officer. (Yet another reason priests must wear cassocks.)

It has been the practice of clerics in the United States to not wear the cassock while in public since at least the 19th Century.

Fr. Terra looks very bad.  It is another testament to his heroic character that he made it to the Mass.

    So, clerics
I thought clerics were only for business meetings with other priests etc.

    Yes, he looks swollen.
They certainly had to cut into his cranial bones to relieve the pressure, and you can see the scars of that.
Also, his fingers were broken, but Deo gratias he still has them.

Sigismund is correct.  It is the long-standing custom for priests in the United States, while in public, to wear black suits according to the fashion of the day with the Roman Collar.  Cassocks have been reserved for liturgical and in-home use for two centuries, if not longer.  This has been the custom of priests in the United States for a very long time, and was codified into law by the Councils of Baltimore (the same Councils which drafted the Baltimore Cathecism, so there is no doubting their orthodoxy).

Sigismund is correct.  Priests in the United States, while in public, would wear black suits according to the fashion of the day with the Roman Collar.  Cassocks have been reserved for liturgical and in-home use for two centuries, if not longer.  This was the custom of priests in the United States for a very long time, and was codified in law by the Councils of Baltimore (the same Councils which drafted the Baltimore Cathecism, so no doubting their orthodoxy).
Well, regardless, they (1) wore a collar and (2) were in some kind of official uniform that unmistakably identified them as priests.

No doubt about that.  Just not the cassock.

  • One man, Moran, who said he did it, on tv showed him in a wheel chair? strange and is this photo of him now or of the past.  For all the scuffle that took place, Moran has no scratches?

My thoughts exactly.  I have thought the story was off from the beginning.

    Yes

I assume it's a photo from after his arrest, since his hair was long in the interrogation room just like in the picture, but on his record it is shorter.

Not to his face, but the attacker immediately disabled Fr. Terra with the angle iron to his hands.

I heard the rectory was completely ravaged, with blood all over, so I think they could take a sufficiently large sample of blood for DNA testing. Apparently the DNA matches Moran, the blood in Fr. Walker's car, and the blood in the rectory.

  • Fr. Terra said, when in the hospital, "Much good will come from this." (source).
It already has, Deo gratias: It caused at least one woman to go to confession. (source).
