Expect short CathInfo outage Monday

  • I need to blow all the dust out of the server. It's been a while -- too long, apparently.
The server is looking very dusty. To clean it, I have to shut the server down, unhook it, take it outside and blow it out with the compressor.
    Should only take 5-10 min.

So if you visit CathInfo sometime today (Monday) and it's not responding -- just come back in 10 min, and the site will be back up.

I don't know exactly when I'll be doing it. My availability/convenience IS a factor. I don't really want to take it down during "prime time" however.
    That's why I haven't picked a time yet.

I want to post this and then wait a while -- so most "regulars" know it's coming. I don't want to cause a scare with the site suddenly being down.
    Want to say "thank you"?

  • May I suggest rigging up some sort of filter, so all you have to do is just vacuum the filter? As long as the inlet and outlet sides are isolated, you can use even a large cheap HVAC filter or whatever is easy to vacuum. Or maybe something as simple as it sitting on a rack with a sheet tossed over and tucked under with no concern for isolating the inlet from the outlet should let it circulate air without external dust shed and stirred up by the family being able to reach it.

It's already on a wire shelf almost at ceiling-level. You'd think most dust wouldn't reach up that high. But it does, after enough months pass.
We even put in vinyl flooring in the main room of the house -- which is a huge % of the square footage of our modest house. I hoped that would help with the dust buildup too.
But we have 9 children, and that's a lot of people in a house.
Our home is like a turtle, with the kitchen/dining room/laundry room/living room as the turtle's body, and the 3 bedrooms and "game room" as the turtle's 4 legs. That's it. No hallways, no side rooms, no basement, no accessible attic, no loft. Not even a closet in the main living area.

  • Ok, the cleaning operation is done.

My youngest son (6) helped carry the keyboard outside, etc. and served as my assistant.
One of my older daughters helped too.

The last time we dusted the server was July 2024:

Good. I think a sheet is all you need now as long as there's some sort of frame to space it off the server at all sides. It will surely transfer heat and some air through the sheet. Clean the sheet once per year if even that much, and the server probably once every 5.

The warm server will make an updraft under it pulling dust up to it constantly aside from other currents stirring it up.
