Is it Proper for Ladies to Drink Liquor?
« on: January 22, 2020, 04:45:20 AM »
I have been to traditionalist Catholic  adult gatherings  where the ladies were having drinks right along with the men and what I saw was not in the least bit dignified, to say the least. I saw the women slurring in their speech, talking loud, arguing, staggering, and some almost falling asleep. Some of the women were flirting with other men, not their husbands. The order of the drinking for everyone was first open bar drinks, then champagne, then wine with the meal, then Cognac after the meal (mostly for the men), and then back to open bar, where the ladies liquor drinking was mostly sweet tasty drinks, like Martinis, Margaritas and such.

So the readers will  know what I am like, I was a wild man chasing young girls till I was in my early 40’s when I came back to the Church and later married, so I lived a wild life. In other words, I’ve seen everything, but to see it among traditionalists adult ladies is quite a surprise. I expected more from Catholic ladies who are supposed to be serious about the faith and I ask the question:

Is it really proper for ladies to drink in public, outside of a little wine with the meal? Is it lady like to get inebriated in mixed company?

I remember when the adults, both men and women would drink what they used to call Highballs. I haven't heard the term used for ages, but a highball is simply a mixed drink and for the adults, it was popular at picnics and bowling and at some other gatherings from what I can remember - and while it likely happened, I don't remember ever seeing anyone drunk.

But for trad ladies at trad gatherings, if they're going to drink mixed drinks at all, I think prudence dictates that the drinks should be either well diluted or limited to one or two drinks, maybe both. Aside from that, it's just as improper for a man to drink to excess as it is for a woman.

I don’t know what the answer is, but my grandfather told me that back in the day ((1940s-1950s), women who went to pubs usually had to come in the back door, and that seems to imply that there was something deemed socially unacceptable in women visiting taverns (whether it was alcohol per serving, or a general indelicate environment which was thought inappropriate for women, I don’t know).

What you describe doesn't appear proper either to women OR to men.

What about single women drinking in mixed company, like at parties, night clubs and bars? Is it even appropriate or wise in the least?
