My family converted 4 years ago. One thing that stands out for us is maintaining a spirit of penance during Advent, and trying to maintain joy and feasting through the real Christmas season.

I will say that that the Christmas Spirit ends up being one of the last remaining residues of what's actually a Catholic spirit, "in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis"

I think one of the most striking instances of it is the WWI Christmas Truce, if that isn't a very obvious instance of the Christendom / Christmas spirit then I don't know what is.

It's a challenge, the entire society basically celebrates all throughout Advent and then packs it all up basically right when Christmas starts

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to men of good will"  My all time favourite bible verse.

I can't see the Latin quote as being a last remaining residue of the Catholic spirit for an atheist because the protestants have miss translated the verse to read "peace on earth good will toward men", which fits into their "everyone goes to heaven....we're all saved because Jesus died for our sins"

For an atheist the Christmas Spirit is nothing more than a lot of commercial hoop la.
