Suffering from not being able to get to Sunday Mass

  • Serious back injury is preventing me from being able to function. Taking a complicated mix of pain meds and still barely able to walk. Going anywhere in automobile causes excruciating back spasms and is now limited to essential medical apts. Being driven to Mass would cause huge increase in pain and possibly damage to spine (waiting for MRI results). In spite of this, I feel guilty for missing Mass. I offer up my suffering at missing Mass, but still feel like I'm bad.

THIS^^^.  Church Law is reasonable, and this scenario is well within reason.  Basically, you can't miss because you're lazy or you don't feel like it, but one is also not required to make some heroic effort, like riding on horseback for 10 hours to get to Mass.  Theologians have set out limits of what is reasonable and what is not, but not only would the pain excuse you from going, but I suggest that the possibility of doing damage would render it a sin against your own health by undertaking the trip.

  • Sabbath rest is of divine law. In the New Covenant this has been shifted to Domincal rest. How one observes that rest, i.e., attendace at Mass, is ecclesiastical law. The Sabbath exists for man, not man for the Sabbath.

  • How will you focus and pray at Mass if you’re in excruciating pain?  Better to follow online from your bed or in a comfortable chair.  Read with the missal.  Before Mass, examine your conscience and confess your sins to God.  Make a spiritual Communion.  During the week pray the Rosary or other prayers as able.  Arrange for a priest to make periodic home visits so you can make Sacramental Confession and receive Communion.  Request of the priest Last Rites or special blessing for healing.
The Church does not require Mass attendance at the detriment of one’s health.

  • Accept your Cross and embrace God's will over your own. Even when your will seems good and holy, like wanting to assist at Mass. Nothing is greater than accepting God's will over your own inclinations, desires, and habits, however holy they might be.

Our Lord is sharing His Cross with you, and hoping to take you to the next level of Love of God.

I think you would get a lot from reading Lives of the Saints right now, especially those who dealt with abandonment to God's will, and who suffered physically.

  • Does your priest know of your condition? If not, contact him and ask if it is possible to have a home visit for Confession and Holy Communion.

Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.
