  • Just wondering, but then dealing with random people your come across in your daily lives, whether it be online or in-person, what should I do if someone says something regarding God that might be considered a vain usage or even a blasphemous remark? The same questions goes out in regards to our Lord Jesus. People often blurt out His name so easily... and I am unsure what I should do. Should I rebuke them? It might be a wake up call for them, or perhaps they will just add sins to their sins...

  • Depends on how strong you are. Could you take them in a fight?

  • I'm a woman- usually I am addressing a man. I could take them on verbally but not physically. Usually this is a work situation and not a bar so it hasn't come to blows yet.

  • My husband just makes the Sign of the Cross when he hears Our Lord's name taken in vain. The person then may inquire to why, then a conversation can start.

I’m a woman too.  I face this too with men.   I correct them to their face.  I tell them “please don’t take God’s name in vain.”  Thank you.

Yesterday, I had to gently correct my own Mother to not take God’s name in vain.  She wasn’t upset. She is getting better.  I told her that she doesn’t need demons flocking to her and the family.

You can also say "Blessed be His Holy Name"

  • Don't get into a physical fight. That's a lawsuit or even worse waiting to happen.

Effective also when dealing with pesky JWs, or Mormons, or small hats in their mitzvah-mobiles who assume that any woman modestly dressed is one of their own.

  • Depending upon the person person and situation, make the sign of the Cross, say, “Blessed be the Name of Our Lord Jesus Christ,”  “Thou shall not take the Name of the Lord in vain,”  Say nothing directly about it.  Echo the statement substituting the person’s name for God’s name.“_______, dang it!” “Oh, my ________!”  The person usually takes the hint.
A physical conflict is to be avoided.  A woman trying to fight a potty-mouthed man is a sorry spectacle.  I can see that only if doing so is the only means of defending one’s virtue.  That would mean the man has taken to assault in addition to insulting God.

  • I make the Sign of the Cross or say, Blessed be the Holy Name of Jesus. That way, no matter what the offender does, I've given God His praise and reparation.

That has shocked a few over the years. Some miscreants, however, will double down. These must be avoided, as much as possible.

  •
Blaspheme has been around for ages, its not new to our age.
We were given two methods of dealing with it back in the day.

    1.  If we overheard it and were not involved in conversation with the blasphemer we were to pray the Divine Praises, either quietly or mentally.  It only takes a minute and we were told that blaspheme is so serious it takes more than just a word or two to repair it.

    Blessed be God
    Blessed be His Holy Name
Blessed be Jesus Christ true God and true man
Blessed be the name of Jesus
Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart
Blessed be Jesus in the most holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.
    Blessed be her Glorious Assumption
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother
Blessed be St. Joseph, her most chaste spouse
Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints

    2.  If we heard it while in conversation with anyone... family, friend etc. we would finish the expression by turning it into a known prayer.  This would usually stop the blasphemer in their tracks and render them speechless for a minute.  Then we'd just shrug and say "well you started the prayer, I just gave the response"  This method worked wonders especially with family.
    e.g.
OMG .....have mercy on me a sinner
Oh for the love of Christ.........preserve us from sin  (this was common in the '50's)
Jesus.....meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine

I think you get the idea.  Be prepared

  • Sign of the Cross, and any phrase that is used in exorcism:  Jesus, Mary and Joseph;  Blessed be the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ.(demons hate hearing Precious Blood) Mary's name.

I had an encounter with a man in Texas 10 years ago.  He knew of me (catholic) and stranger to me (someone's guest).  He spoke of a minister, women who had healings take place.  After he spoke and before I asked the Holy ghost for help.
I remembered the demons hatred for the Precious Blood.  So, I asked this man, "Where do you suppose she gets her powers?)  He responded, "The Holy Ghost".  Oh, I said, "What about the Precious Blood of Christ".  He stood up, and in raged screamed, "What of it!".   I left the room.  About 20 min. later he apologized.

In my opinion, he harbored a demon who did not like what it heard.  He could not control his rage.  He had to excuse himself like one does after a burp they can not control.  Wow, it is a sight to see!

  • To give some insight as to how blasphemy was treated in a catholic school setting consider the following, remembering that for a child it was considered the ultimate mortal sin.

If it was heard on the school yard, all those within earshot would shout out the appropriate prayer response.
If it was heard by the nun on yard duty, the response was swift and severe and always the same.  The perp's next recess was spent in church (schools were always built next to the church) where they were to perform the Stations of the Cross and the church custodian was always there to make sure they did.

Now this was severe because the boy (usually) was on the intermural baseball or hockey team and they practiced during recess.
Now if the blaspheme happened during a game with another school, (the umpire was a young priest or coach), again the response was swift and severe.  The perp was out for the remainder of the game and if it was a late inning or unusual circuмstance, they could be sidelined  for the next game also.  No appeal or consideration was given even if it was the playoffs.

Children hear blaspheme on the streets and far too often in their own homes but as parents and teachers it must be something that is never tolerated and dealt with swiftly.

  • Thanks for the responses everyone, they are very helpful. I am a male but grew up as fake Novus ordo catholic so I am not used to saying these prayers in response to others blasphemy.

I have written then down. Hopefully I will be able to make use of them at the appropriate times. I am usually stumped when people use our Lord's name in vain (as I dont expect itl) and by the time I think of a response it's already done
