God is love

I've always been told God is love.

I also read somewhere that our lady appeared to a saint, and spoke of her horror when a 12 year old boy who committed one mortal sin, was dragged to hell.

Surely, if God is love, he wouldn't want someone to suffer for all eternity over one mistake?

In the fourth chapter of his first Epistle, Saint John the Apostle, a very good and reliable source, affirms twice that God is love. Something read somewhere doesn't seem like a good or reliable source. In considering the value of statements and whether they concur or conflict, one should consider the source. As to what God would want, Saint Paul, another very good and reliable source, tells us that the will of God is our sanctification, which would concur with what you say: surely God wouldn't want someone to suffer for all eternity over one mistake. There are all kinds of things God wouldn't want, but men do. Grace makes it possible for men to want what God does want. If we consider, think about, dwell upon, look for, ask about what God does want, then we can cooperate with his will, unto our sanctification.

Even one mortal sin separates us from God eternally and could put us in Hell if not confessed of before our deaths. 
I'm not trying to sound self-righteous at all, and if I do, forgive me. This is Catholicism 101, however. Some of the first tenets of our Faith.

Of course, that one mortal sin is not a mistake, but an intentional rejection of God and His law. The intention is the sinner's to sin and reject God. It is not God who wants the sinner to sin or to reject Him. God offers sinners opportunities for repentance, forgiveness and salvation. It is men who remain impenitent, or who are ready to declare others condemned. "Therefore judge not before the time; until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have praise from God." [1 Corinthians 4:5]

I believe that the age of reason is around 7 years of age. That means that 5 years would have passed since to said sinner reached the age of reason. That is why children now have the opportunity to confess their sins from around the age of 7. 

Our God is a loving and just God. Nobody goes to hell for his mistakes. He goes because he rejects God.
