  • Mr. Vere, do you think this is a good time to be arguing in favor of some kind of agreement with Rome? It's very clear that Pope Francis doesn't like traditionalists. It's also clear that some people, such as Bishop Williamson and the much hated Malachi Martin, predicted that a very liberal Pope would be elected after JPII who would take the Church to an even greater and deeper crisis than it was in before. Now these two men have been proven correct(the timing was slightly off; Benedict's election was a temporary stop gap whose work was to vindicate the old Mass, and lift the excommunications before all hell broke lose). I'm not a member of the Resistance, I still favor the SSPX unless +Fellay makes some kind of compromise. But I can see the wisdom now in what some of those who told His Excellency Bishop Fellay to be wary. What do you say? Do you really believe that there isn't a crisis in the Church, and that the actions of Pope Francis are compatible with his predecessors? Thanks for your response.

Apologies for not answering sooner. I just caught this thread now. Like many within the ED movement, and quite a few FSSPX Fellay loyalists, I was hoping the reconciliation would happen under Pope Benedict.

I would still like to see it happen under Pope Francis, but recognize that he was not as personally invested in an agreement as Pope Benedict was.

That being said, Pope Francis's relationship with the Eastern Orthodox is stronger than any pope since the Great Schism, with the Patriarchs of Constantinople and Moscow now openly discussing future reconciliation as a very real possibility.

A number of educated Orthodox see the FSSPX negotiations as a litmus test for eventual reconciliation between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Ergo I could see Rome under Pope Francis being generous with the FSSPX in order to send a strong message to the Orthodox that he is serious about reconciliation.

Spend some time with the search engine of your choice.  There are plenty of reasons for even the most stalwart trad to thin Martin is a nutjob.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

He did get a lot of things right. He said a really bad Pope would be elected after JPII. He was slightly off; Ratzinger was elected, and he was a moderate improvement on John Paul. But both +Williamson and Fr. Martin were correct that a Pope would retire, and be replaced by someone acceptable to the global establishment. I think Mr. Vere and others who called +Williamson and Malachi loons owe them both an apology.

Not so much nut job as treacherous, double tongued deceiver.
