  • For example, if you have watched pornography in the past, and some genres being worse than others, do you have to specify anything? Or will just saying pornography suffice?
I have confessed such sins before with some degree of clarity but due to shame not 100% clarity, but recently have been severely tempted with scruples coming again, and also reading St Alphonsus sermon on concealing sins in confession.

Also if I got angry/frustrated going to mass and threatened to turn the car around is this a mortal sin? Thank you cathinfo.

  • Just saying “pornography” is sufficient and the number of times. Best to be as modest as possible.

And idk if your second situation is mortal, but asking your confessor would be the best in this situation. Sin is in the intention and I don't know your intentions. I'm also not a moral theologian. Haha.

The best thing to do is just ask your confessor. This way you will know for the future and will help with scruples. I'll pray for you!

  • You don't even have to ask.  Just confess as you are comfortable in confessing.  If the priest needs additional information, he will ask.

  • Sorry to butt in on a topic that is kind of delicate but I think an anonymous forum is actually a good place to learn about these things.

In confessing mortal sins, one must confess the number and type. The only reason you would have to be more specific than simply saying "pornography," would be if you watched pornography that contained sins that are distinct from the standard assumption of lust. Therefore, if you watched things that are against nature( lgbt stuff) or if for example the people involved were nuns or something(sacrilege), you should mention those details. It is not necessary to mention more than that, in fact you should not mention grisly details because of their disturbing nature, only that which is completely necessary to ascertain what kind of sin was committed.

I feel that's it's good to mention this here on the anonymous forum, because one could imagine a scenario in which a priest might not ask you to give these necessary clarifications for fear of him being accused of being a weirdo. Priests can't respond to accusations levelled against their conduct in the confessional, hence some reticence of their part.

I am pretty sure I did mention in confession things that would be against nature. I am quite scrupulous so I don't want to confess again. I think if I didn't confess it already then I would know that I didn't confess.
