  • I always thought the Priest offers Mass and we attend Mass for the greater glory, not to worry about “the Priest goes to fast.” Following that line of thinking, the Priest will slow down and then “he’s too slow!”
Meanwhile…spending too much time trying to keep up with your eyes in the Missal could make you miss the beauty of the Tridentine Mass. As Simple Man stated: let the Holy Ghost take over and enjoy the beautiful Mass taking place

  • Most here agree that the appropriate time is around 20 - 30 minutes.”

What are these 20-30 minutes based on? Mere hunch or actual timing of masses assisted at?

  • Low Masses on YouTube range from 34-45 minutes long.

This 20-30 minute length is clearly too low.

This 20-30 minute length is clearly too low.

So YouTube is the measure of what's appropriate?  OP measured the Mass at 35, and STAS taught 30 from amice to amice.  St. Alphonsus suspended priests who did it under 15, so that was his low end.

Be thankful you have a Mass to go to and can receive Holy Communion.  You're free to spend as long as you want after Mass on additional devotions, but the Mass isn't designed for you personally.

I don't use a Missal myself, at all, and don't always follow precisely the Mass, except in the general sense of what's happening.  Someone cited Pius XII about following along in the Missal in Mediator Dei, but he just said it was praiseworthy and then added a paragraph afterward basically saying, "but everyone's different and there's no requirement to follow along with the Missal" and that there were many other ways to unite yourself to the Mass.  I prefer meditation over reading the Missal.  Now, in MD Pius XII also promoted "Dialogue" Masses, but then Pius XII did and said lots of things that weren't always ideal.

This depends on a few different factors, including how long the propers are, Gloria/Credo or not, and how many faithful are communicating. It also depends on the priest to a limited extent. Newer Priests tend to take longer, while older ones who can say the Canon with their eyes close tend to be faster. Anyways it’s sort of useless to quibble about how long exactly Low Mass should be. The Church doesn’t always prescribe exact times and measurements for every single thing. As other posters have said, 15 minutes DEFINITELY seems too fast, while 40+ minutes seems too long assuming there aren’t lots of communicants.

  • It seems to me that the person who opened this thread does not quite understand the rules for Mass.

If the priest is taking the prescribed minimum time, saying the black and doing the red, there is nothing to complain about.

You might not like it, but he is following the rules. There is absolutely nothing to complain about.

It is really simple as that. There is nothing else happening.

It would be more profitable if you spend some time figuring out how to take greater spiritual benefit from the mass. Following the mass with the missal does not seem to be working for you.

Maybe you could read the Gospel before mass and meditate on it during the mass.

You could try to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary too.

These are just some suggestions. You can find a lot of methods for assisting at mass on books about piety and spirituality.

  • SimpleMan:  Fr. Hesse said Mass at Fr. Leblanc's Our Lady of the Sun.  Fr. Hesse said the Mass too fast and drank too much wine.  Fr. Leblanc told Fr. Hesse he was not to come back.

    Exactly!

Having your nose in a book could be, to use a secular term not entirely appropriate here, "counter-productive".  The Mass is meant to be seen and experienced.  Following along a book is secondary.

AND you're meant to engage spiritually with the Holy Sacrifice more than physically (unlike how the NO would have it).  If prefer to mediate upon Our Lord's Passion, recognizing that I'm basically there at Calvary when I assist the Holy Sacrifice and am present at the Last Supper when I receive Holy Communion.
