In his brilliant February 2020 essay, Collusion: Franklin Roosevelt, British Intelligence, and the Secret Campaign to Push the US Into War, Weber shatters conventional historical narratives by exposing how FDR secretly collaborated with Winston Churchill and British intelligence agency British Security Coordination (BSC)—headed by William Stephenson out of Rockefeller Center—long before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
While 80% of Americans desperately wanted to remain neutral, the White House bypassed Congress, violated U.S. neutrality laws, and kept its operations hidden even from its own State Department.
The essay details several breathtaking acts of manipulation:
- The Fake News Machine: British-backed intelligence front "Overseas News Agency" (ONA) routinely pumped out fabricated stories—such as fictitious nαzι plots in Haiti and absurd claims about Hitler's mental state—which were eagerly printed by the New York Times, the Washington Post, and other major dailies.
- Rigged Public Opinion & Harassment: The BSC rigged polls, harassed the anti-war America First Committee, and ran targeted smear campaigns against prominent isolationist politicians like Senator Gerald Nye and Representative Hamilton Fish.
- The Forged Map: The climax of deception came in October 1941, when FDR delivered a nationally televised address waving a "secret map" allegedly proving German plans to carve up South America. The map was a clumsy British forgery.
In this essay, Weber challenges us to examine the dangerous precedent FDR set. By proving that elite deception and illegal foreign collusion are excused when historians approve of the outcome, Roosevelt paved the way for decades of presidential wars and manufactured consent.
