  • CNN headline about this incident says, "Iran refuses to give Black Box to the U.S."

Really?  This kind of thing epitomizes American hubris.

    No, it epitomizes your ignorance.

Normally, investigators from the country of the plane's origin--in this case, the U.S. as it was a Boeing 737--participate in the investigation of major crashes in other nations.

CBS News) -- "U.S. officials are confident Iran shot down a Ukrainian jetliner in the hours after the Iranian missile attack on U.S. targets earlier this week, CBS News has learned. The Ukrainian International Airlines plane crashed Wednesday soon after takeoff from Tehran's airport, killing all 176 people on board.

U.S. intelligence picked up signals of a radar being turned on, sources told CBS News. U.S. satellites also detected two surface-to-air missile launches, which happened shortly before the plane exploded, CBS News was told.

Federal officials were briefed on the intelligence Thursday, CBS News transportation Kris Van Cleave reports. A source who was in the briefing said it appears missile components were found near the crash site."

Really?  This kind of thing epitomizes American hubris.  There were ZERO Americans on that plane.  So why would the U.S. want the black box?  So they could perhaps frame the Iranians for having done this?  If this was a Mossad operation, no doubt Mossad fears that the Iranian investigation will attempt to cover up the actual cause, so a Mossad agent embedded within the U.S. government makes the demand for them to turn it over to the U.S.
    Thumbs down.
May God bless you and keep you

They (Boeing, and not the U.S. government) go on site to help; there's no circuмstance in which they would simply "hand over" the Black Box.  Canada would have a right to make such demands because so many Canadians were on board.  Not the U.S.

  • They're now claiming it was shot down by SAMs ... so ... NOT the missiles headed toward the targets in Iraq.  If true, the plane was deliberately targeted.  Now, it's highly unlikely that the Iranians would mistake a commercial plane near an airport with a U.S. incursion.

My money is on fαℓѕє fℓαg by our friendly neighborhood "ally" in the Middle East.

Umm... it was Boeing, not the NTSB, whose request for the "black boxes" was denied.

    Quote
Iran said Wednesday that it would not hand over the flight recorders, or “black boxes,” to Boeing, according to the semiofficial Mehr News Agency. The quick rejection of assistance probably also signaled unwillingness to cooperate with other U.S. authorities, such as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

As far as I can tell, the NTSB hasn't even requested them.  So, again, how is this the hubris of the U.S.?

Judging from the list of people from Canada in our newspaper this morning. it looks like the majority were Iranians attending university in Canada and a couple of recent arrivals.
    Not Canadians.

Sure, the Iranians are dumb enough to believe that Boeing totally independent of the U.S. government rather than largely under its control.  Maybe you are, though?

Boeing can send resources over there.

This is the kind of nonsense that makes us despised as ugly Americans around the world.

They were Canadian citizens of Iranian descent.  Otherwise, they would have been added to the number of Iranians in the list.

Iran Air Flight 655 was a scheduled passenger flight from Tehran to Dubai via Bandar Abbas, that was shot down on 3 July 1988 by an SM-2MR surface-to-air missile fired from USS Vincennes, a guided missile cruiser of the United States Navy. The aircraft, an Airbus A300, was destroyed and all 290 people on board, including 66 children, were killed.[1]The jet was hit while flying over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf, along the flight's usual route, shortly after departing Bandar Abbas International Airport, the flight's stopover location. Vincennes had entered Iranian territory after one of its helicopters drew warning fire from Iranian speedboats operating within Iranian territorial limits.[2][3]
The reason for the shootdown has been disputed between the governments of the two countries. According to the United States government, the crew of USS Vincennes had incorrectly identified the Airbus as an attacking F-14 ::)Tomcat, a U.S.-made jet fighter that had been part of the Iranian Air Force inventory since the 1970s. While the F-14s had been supplied to Iran in an air-to-air configuration,[4][5] the crew of the guided missile cruiser had been briefed that the Iranian F-14s were equipped with air-to-ground ordnance.[6] Vincennes had made ten attempts to contact the aircraft on both military and civilian radio frequencies, but had received no response.[7]

Reports are coming out, and honestly, this just seems like a total freak accident. Made possible, yes, by the US-led escalation of regional tensions, but a total freak accident.
