    Putin is only president because he had the right connections at the right time.

    Yeltsin, his predecessor, oversaw an incredibly damaged and economically broken Russia. It was so broken that his approval ratings were in the toilet. He only stayed president because of a fraudulent (supposedly US-involved) "election" in 1996.
