BRUSSELS, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The commander of NATO military operations in Libya on Tuesday denied the alliance's bombing of Muammar Gaddafi's compound was an assassination attempt.

"It is not about regime change. This is about bring an end to violence against population...by stopping and preventing those commanding and control nodes, location where orders are given to troops to engage civilian population," Lieutenant General Charles Bouchard said via video conference from Naples, Italy.

"He (Gaddafi) was not in the room when the bomb fell on the building. We saw him on television the day after that," Bouchard said, adding the attack was "about command and control nodes, not about individuals."

In a statement, the alliance described the attack early Monday as a precision strike on a communications headquarters "that was used to coordinate attacks against civilians."

However, Moussa Ibrahim, a spokesman for the Libyan government, claimed the bombing was an attempt on Gaddafi's life.

It is ridiculous the way these military casuists split hairs.

What's sad is that that sort of hypocrisy has become normal.

Then again compared to the firebombings and atomic raids of WWII that purported to have military objectives, it's rather minor.

I'm no fan of Qadaffi, but the idea that military pretends only to attack places where commands are given without targeting the commanders themselves is ridiculous.

If they want to target the leaders of the Libyan state then they should admit it.  Of course, being hypocrites, they won't.

So typical.  So typical.  The Air Force is chock full of sociopaths.

It's hard to see how someone could direct one of those remote control drones without being a sociopath.
