Interesting thought. Or the notion of a Carrington even is made up. With all the lies, it's sometimes difficult to know the truth.
What do you mean exactly?
I'm pretty sure it's a fact that the Carrington event occurred. It was reported all over the place, and this was before 6 global corporations owned all the Media. I'm sure the fact it happened would be easy to verify. Some above-normal amount of magnetic energy bombarded the earth, which induced an unnatural and unexpected current in telegraph wires, etc. causing many problems. Equipment caught fire, for example.
If the same thing happened today, current would be induced in many sensitive devices causing widespread chaos. The pathways and voltages involved in, say, a smartphone are MUCH more sensitive and vulnerable. Modern Integrated Circuits are very fragile, and can easily be destroyed if you put too much voltage and/or current into them.
Old school electronics were much more hardy. If you build devices using only discrete components (as in the 1970s-1980s) such as transistors, diodes, resistors, capacitors -- the devices are much more hardy. If you go back to vacuum tubes instead of transistors, they could handle even more voltage.
Having studied electronics, I know what I'm talking about.
Anyone with cheap off the shelf equipment can test and verify that a moving magnetic field induces a current in a wire. Extrapolating and guessing what would happen to smartphones is just basic electronics.
