Not much we can do about nuclear war... just make sure our souls are ready to meet God.

I knew a trad years ago who used to joke, whenever the specter of nuclear war seemed closer than usual, that he "needed to buy another gun". He knew he was being silly.

We got a good laugh out of it. What, are you going to shoot down the nuke as it flies overhead, right before it detonates on your city?

There's something funny about it. Here's another version, same joke:

On the news, a man says that there's an asteroid coming, which will strike and pulverize the earth. A man gets up from his chair immediately and says, "I need to go buy more toilet paper."

Meanwhile the Russians built a huge number of fallout shelters for their people.  Our "leaders" spent our money build elaborate and expensive bunkers for themselves.

In the 1950s, we were 10x more affluent a society than Russia, and yet the Russians build fallout shelters.  Meanwhile, in the US, it was a few cheap videos about "duck and cover" and some signs they would put up at entrances to basement buildings (without doing anything whatsoever to make it safe, just putting a sign up).

There are some who claim that nuclear bombs don't exist but were made up to control people with fear.  I'm not convinced, as all the evidence they adduce is purely circuмstantial.
