The Catholic bishops of Venezuela have issued a statement charging that the country’s economic crisis can be attributed to the failures of a “politico-economic system of a socialist, marxist, or communist nature.”

The bishops said that the Venezuelan government has sought to control every aspect of private life, curbing individual rights and hampering economic growth. This sort of centralized control, the bishops said, has “led to oppression and ruin in every country where it has been tried.”

The Catholic bishops have been at odds with the government of Venezuela since the rise of the late Hugo Chavez, whose regime stifled political opposition. In their new statement, the members of the Venezuelan episcopal conference called upon the government to stop the intimidation of critics and media outlets and to free political prisoners.

Shortages of basic products are not new in Venezuela. For the past couple of years, there have been intermittent shortages, mostly outside the capital Caracas. To get everything on their weekly shopping list, Venezuelans have to scout around - and sometimes make do without. In a deeply divided country there's no agreement on why these shortages are happening - with the opposition blaming the government controls and the government citing a conspiracy by the rich against the poor.

So why did posting pictures of empty shelves suddenly become a thing on Venezuelan social media this week? The hashtag #AnaquelesVaciosEnVenezuela ("Empty shelves in Venezuela") became a worldwide Twitter trend, with over 200,000 tweets.

BBC Trending have established that it all began on New Year's Eve, when photographer Alejandro Cegarra stood across the street from a branch of the Excelsior Gama supermarket chain. He was trying to take a shot of the many long queues outside the store. He was approached by officers of the National Guard who ordered him to stop, and he live tweeted about it - capturing the attention of hundreds.

Due to a work related relocation (gas/oil industry) I lived in Vz. Like much of central and south America, the once Catholic country is completely corrupted and obsessed with western pagan culture of tv, music and all things hollywood. This one is particularly infected by extreme protestantism and occultism, i.e., taking hosts in the hand and leaving the church for rituals, regular visitation of psychics, etc etc etc. What an experience to see first hand.
