This most likely has been addressed already, but how dangerous is it REALLY in Mexico at this time?

I have been yearning to go back, but I gather different perspectives about the situation in Mexico. Many say it is too dangerous, and others says it is dangerous only in certain areas. What's the truth?

From what I've read the border & the northern states in general, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Tamaulipas &c. are currently the most dangerous areas, along with a few others such as Michoacan. Southern states like Oaxaca & Chiapas are reputed to be a good deal safer. Anecdotally, I can say that several persons with whom I've recently spoken, who are themselves Mexicans, have told me that they won't be visiting anymore due to the savagery of the doper gangs, whereas before they had made it a custom to go every year, usually to the border areas in Coahuila & Nuevo Leon.. There was a detailed report giving statistics for each state on the internet but now I can't find it, I guess that it must've have been taken down. There is a report put out by the U.S. State Dept. which deals with the level of danger in Mexico by state, but it gives no statistics as far as the number of drug-related murders &c.

I just went last month. It really does depend where you go.

If you go to border towns like TJ, Ciudad Juarez, or others and do stupid things like drink, look for prostitutes and drugs- I would feel scared to. Some (tourist) towns, (I've heard, but can't say for sure) are also heavily inundated with bad guys; I've heard Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta and others. I went to San Felipe, and felt entirely safe the whole time. But I think Baja California is save because of its geographical location. I still didn't chance driving at night time, and when I went, we went in a mini caravan followed our friends car.

If I didn't have a command of Spanish, had physically light features, and acted like an obnoxious Yankee- I would be scared too. My mother's family are from Guadalajara, and my parents and grandmother were there for a death in the family last month and said all was well as well. I think the further you can get away from the border, the better, but it will also cost more which is tragic. Mexico is a beautiful land, and I long for it and all of its cultural and Catholic history too Kephapaulos. I hope I can get back to Guadalajara one day soon, and visit places like Venezuela and Oaxaca in the future.

Sad, would be nice to go and see Our lady/Shrine there.........pretty beaches too...a real shame, like Satan said in 20's, he was making a real mess there.......

I wa a bit with you until this rather foolish comment. You are either re-living a bad experience or devoid on your history of the great Catholic colonization and conversion of Mexico. Plus Christeros, the role of Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ-in MExico and USA-to break Mexico away from Catholic Spain.....doubtful, Our Lady came there if it was such a trash heap and worthless.........seems she came there, led to conversions and changed the face of a once pagan and dark land to a flowring hope, later crushed be the Prots and Enlightement........

Now you have the Masonic victory there, land in the hands of a few, NAFTA,CAFTA, etc that took land away from many and destruction of faith, again, with help from USA and Fɾҽҽmαsσɳɾყ....

so, you are either venting or lacking proper history....

I looked again & found some statistics. One can find them by typing in estatisticas de muertes en Mexico NTN24.com.  The figures given are for several years up to & including 2010, but though a little outdated, I'd expect that the situation hasn't changed that much. It appears that the least dangerous states are Baja California Sur, Queretaro, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Campeche & Yucatan. The worst by far is Chihuahua, the 2nd worst is Sinaloa.

 There may be better more current statistics available, I just haven't found them yet. The Central American countries are mostly just as bad as, or perhaps worse than Mexico, with the notable exception of Costa Rica. If one were inclined to emigrate south of the border, it seems that Costa Rica would be a very good choice.

A friend of mine recently told me of a saying of a relative of his that expressed that never was it better in Mexico than in the time under the rule of Porfirio Diaz. I think though it may have been meant in the context of since Mexico became independent from Spain. There is truth to the statement though because the Church very much enjoyed relative peace during the Porfiriato. I think Porfirio may have been Mason, but I am not sure, although, whether he was or not, his wife I think had great influence in protecting the Catholic Church in Mexico.

No, under Spain, was told that Mexico was a real improvement over Spain itself in many ways.....Cornelia Ferrera had inteview, noting how masons there and in USA helped to destroy that land.....and centralize govt and wealth, of course, into the hands of a few.....
