  • It's easy to read things into this type of event, as when Ratzinger announced his resignation, etc.  I mean, there is a lightning rod up there to prevent the building from burning down.

While nothing is entirely "accidental" where it comes to God, I would imagine that this statue would naturally tend to be struck given its altitude and prominence.

If this is some kind of divine message, it doesn't seem like a good one.  It seems to make Our Lord appear wrathful and ready to strike.

  • I don't believe in accidents like this, even theoreticaly it could be an accident for unbelievers. In our capital city Zagreb, just 15 days after closing all churches by Novus ordo cardinal and bishopsin 2020., earthquake struck about 6 per Richter and great gothic cathedral was damaged. Cross fell down right in front of apartment of Zagreb cardinal Bozanic. He stated in modernist fashion, that it's just a coincedence and most important that nobody was hurt or killed. They now placing some modernist cross and tower. One was damaged and other wasn't. I would bet they will replace both with some post modern ugly cross.

Indeed, God controls everything, although it's theoretically possible that He simply allows the laws of nature to work as expected without interfering.  Who's to know, right?  But even if God allows it to happen, it also can serve to "send a message" to people.  Of course, anti-Catholics are claiming that this event is a condemnation of Catholic "idolatry".

  • Unless there is some reason to see a sign in lightning striking the statue, it seems that it is simply lightning striking a statue.  After all, the statue is on a mountain and there are probably cameras on it every time there is a storm so there are probably thousands of photos of it being struck by lightning.
