When Liu Li boarded a plane for the United States, she had a little bit of makeup on, was wearing a loose dress, and had her hair up. She tried to hold her handbag in front of her belly in a natural way, just as the middleman had taught her. She was trying to look as calm as any wealthy Chinese lady would look when travelling abroad. But Liu Li couldn't help feeling terribly nervous: she was six months pregnant when she left for the United States, where she wanted to give birth to an American citizen. • Seems to me we're going to have a lot of "American citizens" coming over here in 20 to 30 years to manage Chinese assets in this country.

  • This is just a very small peek behind the curtain. Vietnamese communists are doing the same thing in California.

  •   Planing to give birth in America is not uncommon, it not just the chinese who do this. But I have a question: If two illegal immigrants plan to have their children born in US, will their kids be citizens?
So you mean that basing citizenship on blood, (not on the  birth place) is a better choice?

Yes, illegals are counted in the census and their babies born here are citizens.

It seems that one belongs to a nation if one's parents belong to a nation, not if one happens to be born in a particular place.

I cannot prove it, but I don't think the system will hold long enough for this to occur.  The day of reckoning will arrive well before 20 or 30 years.  There may still be a US by then, but it will be a very, very different country (for better or worse).

If it were the case then no american would be an american. They all would be british!

Well, certainly America (the 13 colonies) was British at one time.

By the way I have no ancestry from British people or their descendants.

Just being born in a particular place has no necessary connection to one's upbringing, values and loyalties.  That's the point.

I suppose it could be said the same thing is true of who one's parents are, yet the very fact that someone's parents come from a particular land binds a person to that land more than merely being born in a land.

As a Chinese woman once told me, just because someone becomes an American citizen they don't become Americans.  A Chinese person with American citizenship is still Chinese.

  •   Yes. Sometimes there is at least some fascination with the western culture. But many times it is not. People who are in love with their own Country but have to quit it because of War or other catastrophes always remain missing their own land and admiring their own culture as ten times superior to america's.
And they bring up their children to think and act this way.
