Russia's reaction to NATO: Is the US secretly supporting NATO's first-strike doctrine?

The Italian admiral who made this infamous statement apparently keeps his religious beliefs, if he has any, so much to himself that no reports of any kind on them seem to come up on the Internet.  The big tough black belt karate guy can sound off in earth shattering ways like this but is as quiet as a house mouse about any personal religious beliefs he has, if any.
