This came from a forum member whom I trust.
This person has no reason to lie. Getting first-hand accounts like this beats the news reports from alternative media sites hands-down.

Dear Matthew,

There is something big going in between us and China. Is is serious and it is being censored. I can not find one item on it. I know this for sure as my step-son is on the Naval Ship that is in the middle of this. We almost came to war for sure a few nights ago as China launched aircraft and we did too in response. He said that it was called off for the sake of peace, but that we are in no way out of danger. They are "pissed" big time, he said. He said this came out of our being in this area (I do not know where for sure) for another serious mission and China becoming angry.
He said this is real and that he is limited and can not say much more as China is monitoring everything.
He said the details are probably on our news, however, he would not know how the powers that be in this country have tighter control of the media than China these days.

Have you heard or seen anything?

One of the missions of our Navy is to maintain what are called the Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs). That means, as Sir Wolfram indicated, we will go pretty much anywhere we need or want to go if we think it is in our best interests to do so. We try to respect territorial waters (12 miles from shore, I think), but if the SLOC runs through that 12 mile buffer and we need to go through, the bottom line is that, that is just too bad.

Based on the information you provided, I would guess that this was what is called a Show of Force on both sides. It's like when someone gets too close to your yard and your dog barks and runs to the fence. It is a way of maintaining their honour to their own people ('See, the Americans got too close and we Did Something!') And, our own planes were a way of saying, 'Yeah, right. Whatever.'

I doubt we're about to get into a shooting war with China just yet. Frankly, despite having a formidable nuclear capability, if they decided to really challenge us, China as we know it would cease to exist... and the Chinese know it.

That IS scary. We are right at the edge of WWIII. It will probably begin no later than 2010. I hope everyone is preparing!
