Earliest known inhabitants of the area were the Phoenicians, who were actually the Canaanites, a Semitic people based out of Lebanon, and the Mediterranean rim was always controlled by whoever had the best navy and merchant fleet.
Phoenicians controlled the territory from at least the 8th century BC, and then the North African Phoenicians broke away to become the Carthiginians (but were descended from and related to them).
In the 2nd century BC, the Romans defeated the Carthiginians, famously defeating Hannibal, and then held the territory until the 5th century, after which the Byzantines held it until the 8th century AD.
In the 8th century AD, the Arab Muslims invaded Northern Africa, and even Spain, and held most of that region until the 15th century, when the Spanish counter-attacked during the "Reconquista", and drove them out of Spain, as well as from Northern Africa, which had been their toehold into attacking Spain, and first the Portuguese and then Spanish have held it ever since.
So the Arab Muslims, including Moroccans, are 8th century invaders. If we apply Jew logic that whoever held the territory 2,000 years ago has rights to it now, then the Italians should be there (descendants of the Romans, more or less).
