  • There are millions of people who love and (rightly) venerate God's Fool, the Poor Man of Assisi. I believe it is safe to say that his fervent and joyful example of fidelity to the True Faith was and is one of the most significant influences on the relationship between the Church and the world.

That said, there have been hundreds of thousands of people who have followed St. Francis in his Gospel commitment to poverty, chastity and obedience. Many have been recognized by the Church as saints.

Who are your favorite Franciscan saints, and why?

One of mine is Brother Juniper, a fellow of St. Francis. He was so devoted to preaching penance and faith in Our Lord Jesus without seeking notoriety for himself. He once avoided an adoring and overzealous crowd by spending an afternoon riding on a see-saw with little children rather than allowing the adults around him to pursue a cult of personality. He did not return to the company of the townspeople until it was once again time to go preach.
This evil of heresy spreads itself. The doctrines of godliness are overturned; the rules of the Church are in confusion; the ambition of the unprincipled seizes upon places of authority; and the chief seat [the Papacy] is now openly proposed as a rewar

  • Stephen Francis,

Although there are many things we do not share, I am delighted to see we share a fondness for Brother Juniper!

    Are you a tertiary?

  • Deo volente, soon. I'm (and this is something I haven't explicitly stated in a long time)...

    not Catholic.

Suffice it to say for now that I want to be.

  • There are so many wonderful Franciscan saints.  I do have a special love for St. Anthony of Lisbon and Padua.  He was known as "The Hammer of Heretics" in addition to his other marvelous qualities.  His tongue is incorrupt and kept on display in the Cathedral in Padua. I had the great grace of venerating him there.

One of the first prayers my grandmother taught me was:

"St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please turn around,
something is lost and needs to be found."
    (then recite 3 Hail Marys)

Usually within a short time, the lost article was found.  Once when separated from a tour group in Italy, I called upon him and within 20 minutes I found my way to the parked tour bus.  It has always been never short of amazing how quickly St. Anthony comes to our aid.

You are not Catholic?  Really?  Wow.  You know that is easily fixed, yes?

We can't wait to have you as part of the fold.

  • I'm attached to many Franciscan saints, and St. Francis of Assisi is my Confirmation patron.  I'll mention St. Joseph of Cupertino- the "Flying Saint".  He's the patron saint of college students and I call upon him frequently during midterms and finals.

One my favorite stories involving him was when he said the Litany of the Blessed Virgin with a flock of sheep, as their shepherds were not available.
The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep.  But the hireling, and he that is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and flieth, and the wolf catcheth, and scattereth the sheep.  A

I often pray in the company of my two dogs and cat.  I am pretty sure my cat is a Calvinist, though.  She certainly seems very sure of her own predestination to election.

  • If St. Elizabeth of Hungary was a Franciscan, than she's my favorite Franciscan.

  • So many outstanding saints - I feel a little guilty picking a favorite.  They are all so beloved.
But, it has to be Saint Anthony of Padua.  He never ever fails to successfully intercede for my requests.
