  • Our family had the good fortune to assist at an SSPX chapel for a few years, with a valid priest whom we love and great parishoners.  Only problem was no school, and there will never be one.  We are at SSPV now.  I hate it when people rag on the SSPX, just despise it.

  • I only wish that I had a chapel closer to my family. I would be there in a flash.

  • Don't mind at all. I am currently attending an Indepedent Church. I was so unhappy at the Novus Ordo. I located two Churches near me, one independent and one sede. We began attending the independent Church a little over a year ago. I like the priest, but, there is such strangness all of the time. They are very leary of everyone. They are in the middle of some strange battle with former parishioners who became sede and are actually trying to take this Church away from the current parishioners. None of this makes any sense to me at all. The sede couple is very, very wealthy and could easily build their own Church. Because we are relatively newcomers we are always under suspicion. I kid you not. I have told them a few times that all I want to do is let my children attend the Latin Mass, period.

I think from what little I have put together that they are trying to get the local Novus Ordo bishop to give approval to their existing and having the Latin Mass. The bishop who just left, Imesch of Joliet, was not friendly to them at all. They are sounding out the new bishop. The priests bishop who was supporting him is from Poland and has since withdrawn his support to see if the Joliet bishop will step in. They were all very close to John Paul II and as a matter of fact, there is a picture of this priest with JP in Rome. He is very proud of his ties with JPII.

The thing that made their radar go up on us, is that I have a sticker on the rear of our van supporting the S.S.P.X.

They are so intent on being pleasing to these Novus Ordo bishops that they issue statements that they are not affiliated with the S.S.P.X. or any sede priests.

How insane that they think they need approval from "bishops" that cover up for child molesters and the good guys, like the S.S.P.X. they chase away!!!

Like I said it is what is available, and I have heard that this silliness is not uncommon to independent Churches.

I am so tired of nonsense. Any opinions would be appreciated.

  • There are as many flavors of independent chapel as there are priests.

That's the problem -- there's no consistency. Some tread the fine line between keeping the faith, and avoiding extremism. But all too many get into apocalyptic movements, unapproved private revelations, infighting, you name it. There are too many personalities involved. There's usually someone who "owns" the Church, which complicates matters further, since he/she/they will have an undue influence over the whole liturgical life there, including the priest himself.

I grew up in an Independent chapel, and I have been to several others since then. They are very much "hit and miss" but mostly "miss".

They can be good for "keeping the Faith" and respecting the Mass, but they lack the professionalism that the SSPX brings to the picture. It's nice to have their stability -- it's the next best thing if you can't have an end to the Crisis :)

Granted, it's a sloppy 2nd, but 2nd place none the less.

    God bless,

    Matthew

  • I'd like to have an SSPX nearby.  The only TLM is 40 miles away, but I can't afford a car.

  •  Chant- exactly.  the people who "owned" our former chapel said no to a school which Father tried to start.  I think the concept of professionalism w/SSPX is an insightful one.

I think this "ownership" thing relates to my question of the practice of patronage.

Let's also not forget that Catholicism is intended to be for the whole world, not just for a narrow and select cultural group, and although we may think we are in the end times, we should not assume it to be so. The SSPX does have great advantages in having at least a degree of universality about it, since it has priests in many regions and successfully covering many languages and cultures.

At the forefront of all the faithful should be the desire for unity in orthodoxy and an effort to that end.
