Which devotions do you practice?

  • During my trip to another country I thought about possible devotions to look into for the future. I was wondering particularly of these devotions:

    Sacred Heart
    Immaculate Heart
    Miraculous Medal
    Brown Scapular
    St. Benedict's Medal
    Holy Name/Face
    Child Jesus
    Consecration to Jesus through Mary

As I've really only dealt with the Rosary, I don't know much of any other devotions. I know that there are many false devotions and some that are true and good. I was wondering which of these are good devotions, which are false (if any) and which ones should be adopted. If you'd like to talk about something I didn't already mention (not Divine Mercy as I reject that and I'm already into the Rosary) please feel free.

How many devotions do you practice, and how many devotions do you think one should practice at a time?
For those who I have unjustly offended, please forgive me. Please disregard my posts where I lacked charity and you will see that I am actually a very nice person. Disregard my opinions on "NFP", "Baptism of Desire/Blood" and the changes made to the sacra

I myself practice the devotion to the Miraculous Infant Jesus of Prague, which is very, very efficacious. Also devotion to the Holy Souls (making suffrage for them and asking for their intervention).

The "True Devotion" of St. Louis Marie is not a mere private devotion, but devotion in its true sense: a complete giving over of self to Jesus through Mary. It is the perfect renovation of our Baptismal vows and the Holy Rosary is the best way to practice this devotion, since the Holy Rosary is essentially our sweet Jesus coming to us through Mary Most Holy in the fifteen Mysteries of our Redemption.

    I'll write more later!

  • Sacred Heart and Immaculate Heart are essential.  Every Catholic should wear the Scapular and be enrolled.  The rest is a matter of inspiration, I guess, just like we all have different devotions to different saints at different times.  Right now I am all about St. Stanislaus Kostka.  He has won me signal favors.

The consecration to Jesus through Mary is not a devotion but a way of life.  Do you dare approach Jesus without Mary?  I must admit, it took me a while to understand it; actually, I still don't understand it.  But intellectually I know it to be true.  Mary is raised to such a lofty height, and has such power over the heart of her son, that it is, in a way, more effective to go to her than straight to God.

I try to think of it this way.  If you were married, and loved your wife with your whole soul, it would be the same way.  Your kid could come to you and say "I want this new stereo system" and you'd say no.  But if he asked your wife, and she asked you, you might think twice... That's the idea.  No man can love his wife as much as Jesus loves His mother, it is just an analogy.  He can't resist her, He loves her in a way that is unfathomable, much more than He loves even the greatest of the great saints, and she could never ask anything wrong of Him.
Readers: Please IGNORE all my postings here. I was a recent convert and fell into errors, even heresy for which hopefully my ignorance excuses. These include rejecting the "rhythm method," rejecting the idea of "implicit faith," and being brieflfy quasi-Jansenist. I also posted occasions of sins and links to occasions of sin, not understanding the concept much at the time, so do not follow my links.

    Michael,

Here is something you may find useful.

From the book Kyrie Eleison: Two Hundred Litanies with Historico-Liturgical Introduction and Notes by Rev. Fr. Benjamin Francis Musser, O.F.M. (Westminster, MD: The Newman Bookshop, 1944):

  • In "Fiddler On The Roof"  Motel asks  the Rabbi if he has a blessing  for a sewing machine.  The rabbi responds, "There is a blessing for everything."  Apparently Hobble has a litany for everything.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

     :roll-laugh1:

    I haven't seen that docuмentary.

To be fair, it's the Franciscan Rev. Fr. Benjamin Francis Musser who "has a litany for everything." After all, the title of the book is Kyrie Eleison: Two Hundred Litanies with Historico-Liturgical Introduction and Notes.

  • Anyways, getting back on topic....

Here is something that may be useful for those who are wont to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.

All the devotions you mentioned are edifying. Besides the Rosary, I've read about some other devotions and tried to foster them. Alas, the only other that made root in my heart is the Seven Dolours of Our Lady.

I practice only two. I don't know how many one should practice and I'd like to hear from others too.
