What saint did this?

I remember reading a lives of the saints book and there was this one saint mentioned who was a lay sacristan or something similar during the time of St. Gregory the Great. When hearing someone speak ill of him, he embraced the individual and thanked him. Any help would be appreciated.

I've been looking. I'm pretty sure it's in one of the books in my library. Trouble is, I have such a large number to search through.
