Wearing Casual Clothes in Church

  • When I attend Mass, I wear a shirt, tie, and jacket, which most men who attend Mass at my chapel do.  However, at other times during the week when I stop by the chapel for a briefer time (Confession, private prayer, etc.), I will wear whatever I happen to have on that day.  It is never immodest, but is often casual (jeans, long-sleeve casual shirt, sneakers, etc.).  Is this inappropriate?  There have been comments from others.

I don’t think it’s necessarily inappropriate, however I almost never wear jeans unless I’m working in the yard or going for a hike. Most of the jeans I own are colored, so they are a bit more dressy than regular jeans. Can you buy some colored jeans? I believe that as long as you are modest there shouldn’t be an issue, just ignore the people who are unjustifiably scandalized by your dress.
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

^-- Ditto.  Except for the colored jeans part.... that's just poor taste. :P

  • That was not uncommon even before Vatican II.  Men who worked blue collar jobs would often attend an early Daily Mass right before heading to their jobs, and so had to wear their normal work clothing.

  • Certainly a coat and tie is not required for daily mass, but on the other hand, it would not be "over dressing" at all, for Mass on a Monday morning is just as perfect and Holy as a Sunday Mass.  If you are coming from work, then it's better to attend Mass with your work attire than to not go at all.  You always want to dress nicely when you go to church, if possible.  If you are able to dress up for a weekday visit, then try to do so, and God will be pleased by your extra reverence towards Him and His home.

If you are afraid of looking shabby and it's not too warm, having a nice coat in the car to put on for Mass could help you look more formally dressed.
But, regardless, it's not at all disrespectful or inappropriate. As long as you are modestly dressed it's better to go in casual clothes than to not go at all.

I never wear a tie on Sundays, except for special occasions, like Christmas and Easter. I do always wear a coat on Sundays. When I go during the week to mass I do not wear a coat. That's said, I think you are a better example than I when it comes to dressing for mass. It's hot in our church, so that's my bad excuse for not being the best example I can be. On the other hand, we are not allowed to wear sneakers to our church, it is posted in the entrance and the bulletin, though I would never wear sneakers into a Church. The same for jeans. By what you wrote you did not say that you go to week day mass in jeans and sneakers, you just said confession and prayer. Although you do a better job than I in your dress on Sundays, if I were you, I would just have a pair of shoes and pants in my car to change to during the week when you go. We are examples to others.

  • Jeans with rhinestones would be festive (in any color).

  • Speaking as a woman - I don’t think that you need to ‘dress up’ for Church attendance.  But you do need to be clean, tidy, modest, appropriate and respectful.  And for me a veil or head covering is also essential.

For me ‘appropriate’ would always mean a skirt or dress, but as I don’t wear anything else that’s not an issue.

  • Nowadays ,when people are more concerned with exalting themselves, people are worse dressed than in the past.
Now rich people are even worse dressed than labourers in the past.

Some people nowadays are so stupid that they would wear whatever fashion dictates, even ripped Jean's. When people couldn't find ways to display their stupidity publicly, modern fashion comes to their rescue.

  • For his birthday , I had bought my husband khaki colored jeans from Wrangler and a new western blazer.

Yes, for Christmas and Easter usually suit and tie.

  • I treated my Father for dinner at local diner.  There was an older attractive woman at another table and she was wearing ripped jeans.   Why would anyone want to pay big money for soiled looking or wear ripped jeans?  I remember my Mother would iron on cool butterfly patches when we wore out or ripped our jeans.

LOL. What I mean by colored jeans are Dickies like these:
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

I remember when sin was dirty and the air was clean. Now the air is dirty and sin is 'clean.' Would to God that we could go back to the way it was.
