EMBER DAYS

  • Starting Wednesday, and also Friday and Saturday, we are celebrating the Ember Days of Winter, which always fall during the 3rd week of Advent.

    Traditionally, Holy Mother Church, inspired by Old Testament traditions, ordered her faithful to practice the old laws of Fast and Abstinence on these days, which occur four times a year, according (more or less) to the four seasons.

    Wednesday and Saturday are days of Fast (only one real meal; two snacks allowed) and of Partial Abstinence (only one meal can have meat). Friday is a day of Fast and Full Abstinence (no meat at all).

    Our special intentions must be:

    1) To atone for our sins and negligence since the last period of Ember Days;

    2) To give thanks to God for all his material and spiritual benefits during the said period.

    3) To obtain God's material and spiritual blessings for the new period.

    This observance is not any more under pain of sin (except, of course, the usual Friday Abstinence).  Nevertheless, to be Traditional means also to observe the old customs of penance.

    "Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]

  • They are traditionally days of complete abstinence in the Universal Church, the American bishops granted a relaxation:

    On January 28, 1949, the United States bishops issued modified regulations on abstinence in America again, after receiving a ruling from the Sacred Congregation of the Council. Partial abstinence replaced complete abstinence for Ember Wednesdays, Ember Saturdays, and the Vigil of Pentecost. https://fatima.org/news-views/pasting-part-7-fasting-in-the-1900s-pre-vatican-ii/

    Good point.

    I believe partial abstinence was something, uniquely, granted to the US and unknown elsewhere.
