I’ve always wondered how reliable these kinds of things are, including the prayers of St. Bridget and the various other promises.

Any opinions?

On the contrary, those people who shall carry a copy of this letter with them shall be free of death by drowning and from sudden death. They shall be free from all contagious diseases and lightning; they shall not die without Confession
It's this stuff that gets me the most. We're meant to believe that all it takes is carrying a letter around with you and your salvation is guaranteed no matter what? If this were the case, why wouldn't the Church have just told everyone to carry the letter? They'd never need to tell us to do anything else ever again to ensure the salvation of the entire flock. It's ridiculous; Salvation By Letter Alone.

I’m not 100% sure.  St. Alphonsus recounts similar stories about the scapular, and that is one I certainly believe in.  That’s definitely not ALL it takes, but if someone has enough devotion to wear the scapular ... or even carry a letter ... then there might be just enough there to have the soul be open to God’s grace.  Of course, if one wore the scapular just as a magic charm, God could also see to it that the person might be stripped of it before death.  Wear it as a magic charm, then it might just come up missing “magically” when the time comes.  Conversely, if one wears the scapular with devotion, God will not strike someone down the second he takes it off to shower.

Well said Lad. At the conclusion of my Rosary, I say the 2 Our Fathers, Hail Marys and Glorias in honor of the drops of Precious Blood lost by Our Savior. I think I read a shortened version of the OP years ago and never know all the details about carrying the letter etc. Especially on the days we have the Joyful and Glorious Mysteries, it's good to meditate, even if only for a short time, on His suffering, His wounds, His dying for our salvation and His Precious Blood.
