  • I know there are several here that believe that Jesus was nailed on the wrists, like modern-day Protestants allege, not on the palms of the hands, as is depicted in every crucifix, statue, picture, painting etc. throughout history, so how do you answer this: how come Padre Pio's stigmas were on his palms, not on his wrists?

  • From Ven. Mary of Agreda's Mystical City of God, Volume III:

    673. Presently one of the executioners seized the hand of Jesus our Savior and placed it upon the auger-hole, while another hammered a large and rough nail through the palm. The veins and sinews were torn, and the bones of the sacred hand, which made the heavens and all that exists, were forced apart. When they stretched out the other hand, they found that it did not reach up to the auger-hole; for the sinews of the other arm had been shortened and the executioners had maliciously set the holes too far apart, as I have mentioned above. In order to overcome the difficulty, they took the chain, with which the Savior had been bound in the garden, and looping one end through a ring around his wrist, they, with unheard of cruelty, pulled the hand over the hole and fastened it with another nail. Thereupon they seized his feet, and placing them one above the other, they tied the same chain around both and stretched them with barbarous ferocity down to the third hole. Then they drove through  both feet a large nail into the Cross..............

  • It's an interesting question. I have heard it said (can't remember where) that because there is nothing but flesh to prevent the nails from tearing the palm and thus not supporting the weight of His Body, the nails needed to go though the wrist. This makes sense to me.

Jesus Himself says in Luke 24:39 See my hands and feet, that it is I myself...

I don't believe it is something we really need to establish, as long as we live as though we appreciate all the suffering He went through for our sins and that He died for love of us.
Help of Christians, guard our land from assault or inward stain,
Let it be what God has planned, His new Eden where You reign.

The great forensic doctor Frederick Thomas Zugibe, who passed away in 2013, spent his life studying the crucifixion of Our Lord.

His results show that there is no contradiction between nail holes in hands and in wrists.

Entrance point front of hand, exit point top of wrist. No bones broken this way, in fulfillment of the Sacred Scripture.

If I am not mistaken, but didn't they use ropes around the hands and wrists. This was to prevent the nails pulling through the palms with the weight of the body near and after death when the crucified could no longer hold themselves up.

  • More information on the research from Dr. Zugibe here:

    https://www.shroud.com/zugibe.htm

It does make sense to me, and is consistent with Holy Scripture.

I've looked at several pictures of the stigmata of the Shroud and to me it clearly looks like the palm was pierced, not the wrist. The blood hole would look a lot higher if it were on the wrist, as well as the trickled blood.

  • The shroud of turin looks like in the palm. Not the center like Pio's, but the lower palm. In the carpal bones.

  • A lot of this controversy comes from the book, "A Doctor At Calvary", by Pierre Barbet, published back in the '70's, I think.
There was a big debate about whether Our Lord was nailed in the palms or wrists.  Forensic tests suggested the palms are much too weak to hold the weight of the human body...
I have my reservations of Mary of Agreda.  I find it hard to swallow the idea of an Angel "impersonating" the bambina in St Anne's lap so Mary could pay a visit to the Divine court...  People should be very wary of quoting Mary Agreda or Anne Catherine Emmerich or, God forbid, Maria Valtorta, as though this was scripture or a pronouncement of the magisterium.  (By the way, the Nihil Obstat and Imprimater mean nothing in my book.  I have seen many a book written in the '40's and '50's with these approbations from the office of Cardinal Spellman that contain heresies.)  Read what they all have to say about St Anne- it all cannot possibly be true, unless she resurrected from the dead at least twice...
My final verdict is St Padre Pio.  He had the stigmata.  I'll take that over a whole busload of doctors and "private revelations".
Our Lady of Fatima Pray for us you are our only hope!

I also find it interesting that these private revelations--like those of st Bridget, st. Mary, or Anne Wmmerich--contradict each other in certain aspects. One says Jesus was nailed with three nails, other four; one say Jesus was nailed standing up, the other laying down;one says Mary was xx when she died, the other says yy;  etc. Either these revelations are nothing more than pious meditations or fruads/delusions. Or maybe they are true revelations,   but the seer or whatever erred in reporting the facts 100 percent correctly. I still like reading 'revelations' though. They are thought provoking.
