I wonder if anyone here knows why this song has been condemned.

Our last choir director, a 93 year old Lutheran convert (who passed away a little over a month ago; RIP) used this song at our chapel, so I might be desensitized as to whatever is wrong with it.

I have an open mind though -- I know that some songs are too mushy, vague, sentimental, etc.

We do not have the song, but we use Adoramus Hymnal and it is thin compared to some.....let me reprint the lyrics and maybe we can see:

cant see in the lyrics an issue, maybe some think this "with fervent love for all," means universal salvation, but that is a real huge stretch!

yes loves all, wants all to be saved,but due to mis-use of free will, not all ARE SAVED.

I don't think the original words were "for all."

I think it was "for men," at least, that's the way they sing it here.

maybe you then have something there-one would have to dig for original vs a revised wording history.....

would it ot be easier to cross out and then add a word? rather then throw out or tear out a page from the hymnals?

I don't think the all/men change makes much difference really. We know that men does not exclude women, so it could still mean all!

Nice hymn, I always thought. I can't see what's wrong with it, and I'm pretty sure we've sung it in SSPX churches over here.

then, why tear out a page or throw out the book, SSPX should just cross out word(s) and write in correct ones and then get that info via pulpit to congregants.....

My mom said this too... it's the mushiness and sentimental-ness of the song.

Certain songs were condemned because of their use of chromatics (sharps and flats and half steps) in the song. It didn't follow the liturgical music norms put down by Pius X (?) when he wrote his encyclical on liturgical music.

Those mushy chromatics were not allowed. My mom was going to be a School Sister of Saint Francis, played the violin and piano, and studied music while she was there, so she would know.

Neither of us liked that song anyway. :barf:

My mom said it reminds her of "Take me out to the ball game"...

Those "mushy gushy" song like my daughter says, are still nauseating to this day.

I'm glad they disallowed them.

Funny you should say it reminds you of "Take me out to the ball game" --

There's one song in my song binder (again, compiled by our late choir director) called, "Oh take me to Thy Sacred Heart"

I don't know if we've sung it, but I can't help but think it uses the same melody as the famous baseball song.

It's gotta be in the melody. I've noticed that at our chapel, they sometimes pick hymns just dripping with sentimentalism. This taints divine worship.

:shocked: Um... isn't this song one of those traditional nun CDs?! I'm pretty sure it is!

Has it been condemned by the Church? Or just condemned by those who study Catholic hymns? Is it okay to hear/sing it even in our homes?

That's what I'm thinking: it's in the melody.

Parentsfortruth is right. Very few hymns we sing -- if any -- have a melody like this one.
