  Um... isn't this song one of those traditional nun CDs?! I'm pretty sure it is!

Has it been condemned by the Church? Or just condemned by those who study Catholic hymns? Is it okay to hear/sing it even in our homes?

No need to fret -- it's not a question of sin. Bad taste isn't a crime; you can listen to it privately all you want.

We're talking about objective guidelines for hymns to be used before/during/after liturgical functions.

I think it was hymn selectors that "condemned" (or rejected) it -- it's not on the Index or something. It's not condemned like Lutheranism or The Da Vinci Code.

That's what I'm thinking: it's in the melody.

Parentsfortruth is right. Very few hymns we sing -- if any -- have a melody like this one.

I've always liked the tune. Rather jaunty!

  • They sang it at SGG; and I was told by parishioners it goes back to the era of their parents.

But the music is inferior, trivial, sing-song.  It bothered me every time.  There is so much better music that people could be singing -- like Aquinas's hymns.

In Catholic worship the use of music and art should uplift the mind to God, the Author of all beauty.  Leave the 'entertainment' music to the Novus Ordo and the Protestants.

By the way, had anyone noticed that at SGG  Fr. C was mixing modern stuff, with overblown, musical comedy-style harmonies, in with the good choral music?  Or didn't anybody have any opinions of their own on the subject?

  • Whew... That song goes through one's head!

Yeah, it's probably sappy or something, but... let's put it this way... I can think of a lot of worse things. (Like high blood pressure, or rock music.)
I renounce any and all of my former views against what the Church through Pope Leo XIII said, "This, then, is the teaching of the Catholic Church ...no one of the several forms of government is in itself condemned, inasmuch as none of them contains anythi

I don't know either of those songs, so I'm safe.  :dancing: The song in question in this thread, though, is on a CD I have listened to quite a lot, so it, on the other hand, is quite stuck in my head.

So how does that reconcile with your essays on Art, how it must be objectively beautiful?

  • Just to ask one question, Dulcamara:

Is Jackson Pollock's well-known, large paint-splattered canvas, a piece of junk, or not?

    (If you care to answer.)

  • When I was going to the SSPX chapel in Arcadia, CA, for 2 years, they sang "To Jesus Heart All Burning" more than a few times.

  • I was looking for lyrics, and English translations for Latin lyrics, to sheet music we sing to at Benediction at our church.  The songs are:
    -To Jesus' Heart all burning
    -O Salutaris Hostia (No. 7)
    -Tantum Ergo (No. 2)
-Holy God, we praise Thy Name

That led me here to this CathInfo post.
The first song above, and the title of this thread, can be found at
    http://www.sermonindex.net/modules/bible_books/index.php?view=book_chapter&chapter=64177
    and shows the lyrics as
    To Jesus' Heart, all burning
    With fervent love for men
    .

Apparently, this is how it was published in The St Gregory Hymnal And Catholic Choir Book available to view at http://www.sermonindex.net/modules/bible_books/index.php?view=book&book=708 , the title page of which
may call into question the notion that there was any condemnation of this song.
On that title page, we see:
NIHIL OBSTAT J. M. CORRIGAN Censor Librorum Philadelphia, July 7, 1920

    Imprimatur + D. J. DOUGHERTY Archiepiscopus Philadelphiensis

APPROVED BY THE MUSIC COMMITTEE OF THE SOCIETY OF ST. GREGORY OF AMERICA (The Society approved by the Holy See by Rescript No.6914)

    Very Rev. Leo P. Manzetti; Rev. John M. Petter, S. T. B.; Rev. Simon M. Yenn; Rev. Charles J. Marshall, C. S.C.
