  • So sorry to hear about your friend.  My condolences.
Remember, we live in time, but God is in eternity and can access past, present and future.
When your friend died, God knew you would pray for him in the future, and hopefully took that into account and had mercy on him.
A very pious old priest, who died 20 years ago, taught me to pray for people even if they'd been dead a long time.
Do offer the prayers for the dying for your friend.  God is merciful.

Thankfully to Mr. G,(part of a quote on another thread) I see where the old priest I quoted above got his information.  It was from Pius XI.
"In his magnificent encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor – On Reparation to the Sacred Heart – Pope Pius XI explained how the graces implored via prayerful acts of penance are applied by God in a way that is not timebound.
Specifically, the Holy Father was addressing those who may wonder how our acts of reparation can “bring solace to Our Lord now, when Christ is already reigning in the beatitude of Heaven.”

The Holy Father tells us that Our Lord died even for our sins “which were as yet in the future, but were foreseen.” In a similar way, he continued, “it cannot be doubted that then, too, already He derived somewhat of solace from our reparation, which was likewise foreseen.”

The point is that our prayers for one another are, to God, timeless.

  • I really needed to read these replies. I recently found out that a lifelong friend passed away. She was baptized a Catholic in 1944 and was one of 12 children. She lapsed from the Faith though, years ago. I hope she died in communion again with God, and I wondered if I should pray for her.

  • Hi there,

This is a question for everyone. I've recently started practicing in a church of the true traditional faith so I'm still learning a lot of stuff. I was wondering considering all the churches practice the new mass and the priests gives out false teachings, can I still go into a modern church and light a candle for my Mother that's deceased? The church I'm in doesn't have a fixed church so there isn't anywhere to light a candle for my Mum.

Love to hear everyone's thoughts about this and if anyone has any other info on how I can help my Mother's soul in any way, I'd love to hear that too.

    God bless :)

  • How about putting a votive candle in front of your crucifix at home and lighting it when offering prayers for your Mum, especially the Beads for the Dead?

I started doing that a few days ago, took me a while to get a framed photo of my mum. But I have an LED candle on all the time by her picture. I say a chaplet for the holy souls in purgatory but maybe the beads for the dead applies more because I'm not sure where my Mum is in her afterlife. I pray everyday to get her into heaven though, please God.
Thanks for that info. It's helpful for me as I'm so new to the faith. The site you gave me is good aswell, thank you.
