  • Hello everyone!

As I had written some posts ago, according as I am allowed by the exigencies of my present duties and those of any future contingencies that may befall me, I shall try to upload scans from the exceedingly precious and rare Byzantine Missal for Sundays and Feast Days with Rites of Sacraments, and Various Offices and Prayers published at Birmingham, Alabama, by St. George's R. C. Byzantine Church in 1958, (having been printed at Tournai, Belgium, by Société Saint Jean l' Evangéliste, Desclée & Cie).

Hopefully these pages will serve to make you realize what great wealth is possessed by Holy Mother Church, riches which extend beyond the Roman Rite.

Stay tuned and happy reading!  :reading:

  • I shall first begin by presenting a very nifty glossary that is given as an appendix in the above-mentioned Byzantine Missal.

This will be a great resource for students of comparative liturgiology and in order to understand all the better the tome itself.

    Happy reading!  :reading:

  • Fascinating!

As I have mentioned, my wife was Byzantine, and one of my sons is a Byzantine priest.  Assisting at the Divine Liturgy has been a great joy for me.

  • I think it would be best if the person placing the "thumbs down" would be able to explain why he/she did so.

  • Wow, someone out there really dislikes the Byzantine Rite, 'cos even Sigismund got a thumbs down. Quite sad...

Sigismund, you get a thumbs up to compensate for that...

  • Well, thank you.  I thought perhaps it might just be me, since I made a comment on another thread earlier today which I expect annoyed a number of people.  I see I have acquired one person ignoring me.  It hardly seems fair to take this out on an entire Rite, though.  For good measure.  I just liked all the Byzantine stuff on this thread, and will do so with new posts as well.  Man, how can anyone who has been to it not love the Byzantine liturgy?

Well perhaps it is personal, either against you or me, probably the latter. I remember exactly where the first three dislikes were given and I have a fair idea of who were the two members behind it, but I cannot figure out why one would dislike the Byzantine Missal scans. I mean, no one is obliged to peruse them, or download them, and they can use the ignore feature if they wish to do so.

  • Undoubtedly the Byzantine Rite is beautiful. However, I was once told that if we are born to the Roman Rite, or live in the west, where it is the main Rite, we should not leave it for another rite.

I'm curious if someone else has heard this, or holds this opinion...

My Catholic dictionary, if you can read this, see the part about "rite":

    Please pray for my soul.

  • Thanks Myrna, that was informative

I'm curious what some would say about attending the Byzantine and our situation in the church today?

  • My son was ordained in the Byzantine rite, but it did require permission.  My wife considered herself Byzantine throughout her life.   We freely attended services in both rites.

  • Happy Feast of St. Anne!

The Byzantines commemorate St. Anne on the 25th of July. Attached are the Propers for the Divine Liturgy.

  • Interesting tangent: the Benedictines today celebrated both Sts. Joachim and Anne with a proper Office, differing from those found in the Roman Breviary for these great Saints. Attached are the Day Hours of this Office from The Monastic Diurnal, or The Day Hours of the Monastic Breviary: In Latin and English, Edited According to the Reforms of Pope Pius X (H. Dessain: Michelin, Belgium, 1952).

The entire Office is a beautiful, synoptic prelude to the sublime Offices of Advent!
